The Barrier Compromising Master Machine was developed by Rowan using notes from Ghosts from Our Past: Both Literally and Figuratively: The Study of the Paranormal book. The machine was able to harness the energy Rowan's Hyper-Ionization Devices generated to break the barrier. He was able to build it in secret in the boiler room of The Mercado Hotel without any or his co-workers or superiors discovering it. The Ghostbusters intervened before he could break the barrier with the machine. Once Abby Yates informed Rowan the police were coming, he electrocuted himself to death. Jillian Holtzmann went to a panel and shut down the machine. Rowan manifested as a ghost, possessed Kevin Beckman, and returned to the Mercadeo. He reconnected the parts to his machinery then reactivated the Barrier Compromising Master Machine as he hummed. The machine activated and electricity cackled. Ghosts reappeared in the Ghost Mirror Portals. He smiled and hummed. The mirrors shattered and the ionized ghosts flew out. A Portal formed where the device was and where the Ley Lines intersected.
- On February 17, 2016, the Ghostbusters Snapchat posted a still had Rowan's notes titled "The First Cataclysm" with a device schematic of some sort with many part labels including Ectoplasm Target Cell, Positive and Negative Spectral Charge Collectors, and High Voltage Electrodes for Spectral Discrimination. The bottom of the paper read, "I will lead them" and was noted as an 'evil plan.
- The notes can be seen on Rowan's desk in the extended edition's version of Chapter 05.
