Plot[]

Trevor drove past the grain elevator. They slowly drove around town. Phoebe looked around holding the Particle Thrower. They drove past Wertheimer's Hardware store. Podcast and Trevor looked around. Trevor what they should be looking for. Podcast told him to look for evidence. Trevor made a left turn. The stop sign they passed was missing its "S" and bite marks were visible. Podcast and Phoebe leaned towards the front of Ecto-1. They drove past an alley where some trash cans and the dumpster were munched on, too. There was blue ectoplasm left behind on them. Trevor asked Podcast to stop breathing in his ear. Podcast declined to. Trevor thought what they were doing was kind of stupid. He asked if they say a raccoon or a possum. Phoebe pointed ahead and exclaimed. Trevor braked to a stop. Muncher was up ahead chewing on a red fire hydrant. Trevor was speechless. Podcast called the ghost a free-floating metal muncher and was definite it was a Class 5. Trevor asked them what to do. Podcast wanted to get him. He pulled the Ecto Goggles down over his eyes. Trevor was lost. Podcast wanted to get a photograph first. Podcast moved around into a good position but he stepped on a lever. The passenger door next to Phoebe opened. She tried to get the others' attention. Her seat extended outside. Podcast was shocked to see a gunner seat in action. Muncher paused and slowly turned his head to face them. One of his hands unscrewed the lid on the hydrant. He roared and flew away as water erupted out of the hydrant. Phoebe yelled at Trevor to go. Trevor stepped on the gas. Podcast went flying backwards.

Trevor turned right and Ecto-1 passed the rushing water. Some of the filth near the No Ghost Logo got cleaned off. Phoebe aimed and fired at Muncher but she nailed the Empress Theatre sign instead. Eventually, Muncher paused and turned and fired metal projectiles out of his mouth at Ecto-1. Trevor screamed and swerved. Phoebe lost hold and wildly shot some news stands and a store front. Muncher flew between Callie and Gary at their table in Enjoy Garden Restaurant. Ecto-1 zoomed by. They turned to see what it was. Deputy Medjuck stood up and talked into her CB radio.

Ecto-1 rounded a corner. Trevor stepped on the third pedal. The speedometer passed 60. Podcast adjusted the goggles. Phoebe fired and wrangled Muncher. He yelped. Trevor was stoked. Phoebe yelled out to Podcast to trap Muncher. Podcast grabbed the Remote Trap Vehicle and headed to the back of the car. He pulled a lever with a black knob then a section of the floor opened up and a ramp descended to the street. The Remote Trap Vehicle rolled down the ramp onto the street. Podcast manned the remote control for the Trap Vehicle. It drove ahead of Ecto-1. A truck honked at them as they passed an intersection. Trevor swerved. Podcast was annoyed and told him to keep the car straight. Trevor invited him to try and drive. Podcast sighed. The Remote Trap Vehicle neared Muncher. He suddenly repeatedly shouted to go left. Trevor turned left past the Summerville Post Office. Ecto-1 and Phoebe were dangerously close to the row of parked cars. Trevor eventually moved more left. Podcast was ready to trap Muncher. Phoebe shouted to do it already. Podcast counted down from three. At one, there was a honk. They were about to drive head on into a truck. They screamed and Trevor swerved out of the way. The Remote Trap Vehicle passed under the truck. Phoebe's Proton Stream took off a piece off the back of the truck. She blasted part of Spinners Roller Hop. Muncher was free of the stream and flew through the interior. "On the Road Again" played inside.

Ecto-1 slid past Spinners to a stop at the corner. Trevor panted and asked what just happened. The gunner seat retracted back into Ecto-1. Podcast lifted the goggles up and told them Muncher was heading for the mountain. Muncher flew past the white Bridge Closed 5 Miles Ahead sign. The Remote Trap Vehicle then Ecto-1 followed after him down the gravel road. Phoebe wanted to get closer. Trevor confirmed he heard. Podcast announced he was in range. Phoebe pushed down the lever and headed out in the gunner seat. Podcast slid down the goggles. Trevor sped up. Phoebe fired and wrangled Muncher. Trevor exclaimed she got him. The Remote Trap Vehicle sped up but they were nearing the bridge to the Shandor Mining Company. Trevor warned them whatever they were doing, they had to do it now. Phoebe coaxed Podcast. Podcast lifted a red cover and pushed a button. The Trap opened and pulled Muncher down. He was trapped. They cheered. Phoebe became alarmed and shouted "Bridge!" Trevor screamed. Phoebe barely got the gunner seat back inside in time before impact. The side of the exposed door scraped along the bridge, then closed properly after they cleared the bridge. Everyone screamed. Ecto-1 slid to a stop, kicking up a gravel cloud. Ecto-1 chugged. Trevor stepped out first and was psyched. He high fived Phoebe. She stated they just caught a ghost. Purple electricity arced briefly as the red light blinked on the Trap. Podcast took the goggles off and hugged Phoebe. She was caught off guard. He apologized. Trevor realized that was the mountain he went to the night before. All three looked at the Shandor Mining Company's mountain.

It was evening and Ecto-1 drove back to town. The sound of crickets were heard. Trevor asked Phoebe if anything that transpired bothered her. Phoebe asked what he meant. Podcast called their grandfather a legend and realized they could literally be anything they wanted like an influencer or a DJ. Trevor admitted he thought it was easier when he thought Egon went nuts. Phoebe stated he was not. Trevor wondered why he left Callie then. They heard a police siren. Trevor turned and looked then the others looked. He pulled over. Trevor panicked and knew they were screwed. Phoebe asked what they should do. Podcast calmly replied they fight. Trevor was confused and told them to check the glove box. They popped the glove box open. There was an unopened Twinkie on top of the papers in it. Sheriff Domingo tapped on the driver side window and asked for a license and registration.

Inside the Summerville County Sheriff Department office, two officers stared at the Remote Trap Vehicle and the controller as Trevor talked to Podcast and Phoebe in a jail cell. One officer pushed a button and the Remote Trap Vehicle sprung up. The camera panned right of the officers to the jail cell. Trevor recounted how he was on top of mountain and went to go hang out with a girl on a old rusty mining cage. Trevor sat on one cot while Phoebe and Podcast sat on the cot across for him. Trevor remembered they was shaking like an earthquake all of a sudden then there were lights and he looked down a giant hole where someone was down in the middle of it. Podcast grinned. Trevor asked him if he was even paying attention. Podcast was excited to be in jail. Trevor continued and told them he heard a voice say "Gozer." Lucky confirmed he was speaking the truth because she was there. Lucky was in the other jail cell behind Trevor. He turned to her and tried to make small talk. Lucky asked him for his help with hiding something. He quickly agreed to. Lucky asked him if he had any priors. Trevor replied he did not. Lucky believed he would be charged as a minor and only get two years. Trevor heard "two." Lucky promised to visit him. Sheriff Domingo was right outside the jail cells and asked her to stop messing with his inmates. She apologized to her father. Trevor processed that. Lucky stepped out her cell, nodded, and closed the cell door. She confirmed she was waiting for her ride and remarked he looked good behind bars. She walked away. Phoebe turned, stood up, and asked about her phone call. Sheriff Domingo confirmed she had the right to one and asked who she was gonna call.

Trivia[]

Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trivia[]

  • The grain elevator Ecto-1 passes by was filmed in Dorothy. There is an old grain elevator at Highway 570 near 1st Street. In contrast, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife: The Art and Making of the Movie contends the grain elevator was digitally inserted.[1]
  • Trevor asking Podcast to stop breathing into his ear was improvised by Finn Wolfhard.[2]
  • The Particle Thrower for the Ecto-1's gunner seat is shorter and lacks a barrel extension mechanism. It took inspiration from military vehicle weapons having a shorter barrel so troops could get in and out fast. The thrower was named the "snub nose."[3]
  • Podcast calls Muncher a Class 5, the same classification as Slimer.
  • One of the pieces on the bumper of the Proton Pack prop on the gunner seat kept falling off. In the 20 to 30 takes, Ben Eadie had to re-glue the piece back on each time.[4]
  • The Hero Ecto-1 used for stunt driving in Afterlife went through a couple suspensions just because of the extra weight from the roof equipment.[5]
  • The Muncher chase was built as an afternoon chase that crescendos at sunset. It was filmed over the course of principle photography in different towns. Jason Reitman considers it one of the most complicated pieces of filmmaking he has ever undertaken.[6]
  • The Muncher chase scene took all of principal photography to film.[7]
  • Some of the shots of Phoebe on the gunner seat were filmed against greenscreen and composited in later. If a scene involved using a second unit and stunt double, the visual effects team did a face replacement with Mckenna Grace's.[8]
  • The Wertheimers Hardware storefront was filmed in Drumheller.[9]
  • Filming of the Muncher chase was seen at the corner of Railway Street and Nanton Avenue in Crossfield, Alberta, Canada in August 2019.
  • When Trevor, Podcast, and Phoebe, in Ecto-1, find Muncher eating a hydrant, that was filmed in front of Queens Hotel in Fort MacLeod.
  • The Proton Pack for the gunner seat was made by cutting up a foam stung pack prop with a hack saw[10]
  • The cage for the gunner seat was plastic or wood cut using a Glowforge.[11]
  • Ashley from the Alberta Ghostbusters designed a neutrona wand box that was ultimately unused. It ended up in her home.[12]
  • At one point, the thrower for the gunner seat was going to be white and plastic.[13]
  • The Gunner seat reveal was filmed in Fort MacLeod, on the corner of Second Avenue and 24th Street.
  • The Kenner Ecto-1 toy featured a similar blaster chair.
  • In pursuit of Muncher in Ecto-1, they turn off 2 Avenue onto 24th Street then past the Empress Theatre at 235 24th Street, Fort MacLeod, Alberta T0L 0Z0, Canada.
  • The theater signage blasted by Phoebe is that of Fort MacLeod's Empress Theatre.
  • The scene where Callie and Grooberson eat dinner was filmed in the Enjoy Garden on Railway Street in Crossfield.
  • The genesis of the Remote Trap Vehicle came from the desire to see an old fashioned 1980s car chase. Once the gunner seat was imagined, the Remote Trap Vehicle idea came soon after.[14]
  • A Traxxas Stampede 4WD with a completely redone chassis was used for the Remote Trap Vehicle props.[Note 1][15]
  • The Trap doors on the stunt Remote Trap Vehicle don't open because it was used in the high speed chase scenes. The hero Remote Trap Vehicle props either started opened or closed then moved to the other position.[16]
  • Sean from the Alberta Ghostbusters casted a dummy version of the Remote Trap Vehicle that was to stuck out of the Ecto-1 halfway because it couldn't eject.[17]
  • To prevent it from being spoiler too early on in promotion, the R.T.V. was omitted in Trailer #1 during the turn. The look of the Proton Streams were also tweaked by the time of Trailer #2.
  • The Summerville post office seen during the Muncher chase bears a fictitious 74024 zip code. Summerville stands in for Woodward, which has the zip codes 73801 and 73802.
    • The post office used was from Drumheller.[18] and Fort MacLeod at Third Avenue East and Center Street.
  • A brief two second snippet of "On the Road Again" can be heard as Muncher flies through Spinner's Roller Hop at 1:00:52.
  • During filming of Ecto-1 and the RTV following Muncher down the gravel road, Ben Eadie accidentally drove an RTV into some rocks and it crashed under a camera truck and it exploded and caught on fire. After the write-off paperwork was done, Eadie was told to throw the box of remains away but he put it in his car with the intent to do a restoration.[19][20]
  • The ominous scene of Trevor, Phoebe, and Podcast looking at Shandor Mine's mountain after trapping Muncher and realizing there's a connection mirrors when Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore came up from the sewers in Ghostbusters II and realize the River of Slime was flowing to the Manhattan Museum of Art in Chapter 18: In the Tunnel.
  • Trevor realizes they were at the base of mountain he went to in Chapter 7.
  • Podcast, Trevor, and Phoebe briefly discuss Egon.
  • The scene where Ecto-1 is pulled over by Sheriff Domingo was filmed in Fort MacLeod at the Alberta Wheat Pool Grain Elevator at 15 St & 1 Avenue.
  • After being pulled over by the Sheriff Domingo, a Twinkie is seen in the Ecto-1's glove box.
  • The Summerville County Sheriff's Department was filmed at 1112 Railway Street, Crossfield, Canada.

Now you'll notice--I'm ex-infantry so when you have vehicle weapons, they always have a shorter barrel and the reason for the shorter barrel is that you can get in and out of the vehicle a lot faster. That same methodology or thought process went in on the wands so the Ecto wand was shorter and did not extend so that it would kind of go with everything. It was also called the snub nose."

That has rarely been done before, as the proton beams and ghosts tend to dim and disappear outside during the day. We built the Muncher chase as an afternoon ghost hunt that crescendos at sunset, shooting it piece by piece over the entire filming schedule over multiple towns and sets, setting every corner-turn and proton blast to the right time. This thing's made to look good not not drive good. Those can be very very different things so so hard to handle to start with so I'm driving along and and yeah I'm going to tell the story again somewhere. I'm yeah anyway so driving along and I hit a rock and it kind of goes off to the side and I'm like like okay so I adjust I just adjust, hits another rock Underneath and it's underneath the camera truck and it explodes like we're talking flames and and parts and these things, all these things these things are like tens of thousands of dollars I'm like 'I'm so (expletive)."
