Plot[]

Phoebe stared at the inactive P.K.E. Meter in the study. Callie walked in and dumped her purse. Callie reminded Phoebe they were barely hanging on. Phoebe stated she did not understand. Callie countered she understood they drove around town, destroying expensive property. Phoebe stood up and asked if she ever thought her father went to Summerville for a reason. Callie revealed she only thought he was a sad old man who turned his back on his family and his partners for a stupid farm in a town nobody cared about and where everyone thought he was nuts. Phoebe thought he was special and loved science like her. She asked her why she never shared that Egon was her grandfather. Phoebe started to tear up. Callie was glad Phoebe found herself but she herself only saw reminders that she did not mean a thing to him and he never cared about her. Phoebe stated he was not nuts. Callie declared he was an asshole and welcomed her to the family. Trevor sat near the top of the staircase upstairs in silence.

Zuul and Vinz Clortho emerged from their stone statues at the temple.

Gary Grooberson went to the local Walmart. Vinz Clortho, in wisp form, flew into the store after him. Gary made his way to the frozen foods aisle. He opened a door of a refrigerator fully stocked with Baskin-Robbins ice cream. He took out a Jamoca. A woman screamed elsewhere in the store. Gary turned his head in reaction but continued on to the next aisle. He saw the toppings and stepped forward to the shelf. He snickered at the sight of the blue velvet flavor and walked past a shelf of Stay Puft Marshmallows. Something moved in one of the 10 ounce bags. Gary doubled back and stared at the bag. An entity tore a hole from the inside and emerged, yawning and rubbing its eyes. It was a Mini-Puft, a tiny but not identical version of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. It saw Gary, smiled, and stepped forward but it fell off the bag and landed on its face. It stood up and the imprint of the shelf vanished. It stepped forward. Gary was in awe. He laughed and waved to it. It marched forward but stopped at the edge of the shelf. It turned around and looked at its surroundings. Gary poked its butt. The Mini-Puft frowned, turned around, and smiled. It bit Gary's finger. More Mini-Pufts burst out of bags. Several on a Roomba drove into Gary's left shoe. One hopped onboard the Roomba and they ram into the shelving on the opposite side. There were tons of Mini-Pufts all over the aisle. The Roomba ran one over as it drove out of the aisle. A few floated onto the shelf of Stay Puft Marshmallows with little paper umbrellas. One impaled a Mini-Pufts' head from behind. It pulled on the handle and the umbrella closes on its head. One punted a regular marshmallow off the shelf. Gary was horrified and hurried past a Fourth of July themed display for grills. A lone Mini-Puft on a grill threw its hat like a discus onto another grill populated with many Pufts. One jabbed two Pufts with a skewer. One on the dial managed to turn the grill on. A Puft on top melted. One lied on its stomach and watched its spit drift down. The Pufts on the skewer roasted. A Mini-Puft kicked the head off another. Another forced a Puft onto a Stay Crisp Graham Cracker and laid a Hershey bar on top of it. Several carried a blow torch over and heated up the chocolate bar. Two Mini-Pufts pushed a blender off a shelf with one inside. Another Puft landed inside another blender. They raced over. One pushed the other off the shelf then turned the blender on and watched as the Puft inside levitated. The one on the shelf mashed buttons. A Puft came up from behind and headbutted the other into the buttons. The Puft inside splattered.

Gary came out an aisle then froze. Vinz Clortho was across from him with his head in a Purina Dog Chow bag scarfing away. Gary quietly backed up. The Mini-Pufts on the Roomba crashed into his shoe then drove on. Vinz lifted its head out of the bag and stared at Gary. Gary tried to talk to it but Vinz cut him off with a roar. Gary threw his Baskin-Robbins at Vinz's head and ran away, screaming. Vinz chased after him, knocking clothing racks aside, but he slid into some mannequins. He shook a mannequin arm off its head. Gary ran out into the parking lot. Just when the automatic doors closed, Vinz burst through the glass a bit too fast and stuttered. Gary made it to his car. He jumped in headfirst through where the windshield used to be, sat up in the driver's seat and fumbled with his keys. One of Vinz's paws stomped down on the hood. He snarled. The tires squealed and flattened. Vinz looked down then turned back, roared, and lunged at Gary.

The next day, a meeting was held inside Spinners. Podcast, Phoebe, Trevor, and Lucky occupied one of the booths. Gary Grooberson's seismic map was unrolled over the table. Trevor and Lucky sat on one side while Podcast and Phoebe sat on the other. Reseda and Swayze sat in the other booth behind Phoebe and Podcast. Trevor asked what exactly was happening with the map. Phoebe quizzed him about the concentric circles around the mountain on the map. Trevor had no idea what they were. Phoebe went with a simpler question and asked if he saw the circles. He nodded. Phoebe stated something was happening inside the old mine owned by the Shandor Mining Company. Trevor thought that was pretty obvious. Podcast revealed he did some digging on the word Trevor heard in the mountain, "Gozer." Trevor questioned what he meant by "digging." Podcast, annoyed, looked at Phoebe. Phoebe explained Gozer was a Sumerian god who once walked amongst the living. Podcast added it was a "soul-eating, flame-dripping deity of evil" and he speculated it wanted to return. Lucky was surprised of all places, it was coming to Summerville. Swayze turned towards their booth and listened intently. Podcast admitted he would have picked Orlando. Phoebe asked Lucky what the name "Ivo Shandor" meant to the town. Lucky revealed he built Summerville, the mine, the foundry, the school, and the library, hence his name was on everything. Trevor found that last bit tacky. Phoebe continued and talked about how Shandor created an apartment building in New York City made out of selenium girders, mined from Summerville and it was same rooftop of that apartment where their grandfather fought to keep a horde of ghosts from entering the physical plane. Trevor got to the point and asked her what exactly was happening. Phoebe hinted there was only one way to find out.

Trivia[]

Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trivia[]

  • Callie alludes to Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore during her argument with Phoebe.
  • On the basic cable broadcast version that aired on FX, the alternate version of Callie calling Egon "an asshole" is "an idiot."
  • The argument between Phoebe and Callie ended with Callie smashing the P.K.E. Meter in frustration. However, test audiences hated Callie for doing it so it was cut.[Note 1]
  • The close up of the red eye on the Terror Dog statue was a nod to when a similar manifestation happened in the first movie, Chapter 16: Dogs Drag Dana, of the Terror Dogs starting to break out of their statues.
  • The Walmart interiors and exteriors were shot in the Deerfoot City Shopping Centre's Walmart in Calgary. Walmart.[1]
  • Very little was changed in the Walmart aside from changing the price tags from Canadian to U.S. Dollars, adding Fourth of July dressing, and gags for the Mini-Pufts and Terror Dogs.[2][3]
  • Production filmed at the Deerfoot City Walmart over three nights from store closing around 10 pm to 5 am the next day.[4]
  • During filming at the Deerfoot City Walmart, Mckenna Grace and Josie Reitman, Jason Reitman's daughter, played around since it was reserved to him until 9 am the next morning. They rode around in tricycles wearing unicorn onesies shooting Nerf guns at each other. They later made a toilet roll fort in a shelf.[5][6]
  • In the first shot of Grooberson in the Walmart, on the far right is a Ghostbusters Slime Time black T-shirt on display.
  • In the same shot, on the right, the spelling "Vision Centre" is exclusive to Canada. It should have been changed to "Vision Center."
  • Grooberson picks out a pint of Baskin-Robbins. In the first Ant-Man movie, Paul Rudd's character Scott Lang briefly works at one until he's fired for lying on his resume.
  • Grooberson chuckles at the blue velvet flavor of ice cream topping, a nod to David Lynch's "Blue Velvet" movie.
  • A 10 ounce bag of Stay Puft Marshmallows cost $1.20.
  • Incidentally, miniature versions of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man previously appeared in The Real Ghostbusters: The Return of Mr. Stay Puft comic in June 1989 with the Mini Stay Puft men, bestial Marshmallow Minis in Ghostbusters: The Video Game, and Mini Pufts in the Ghostbusters: Deviation comic in 2016.
  • Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan didn't want to do another giant entity when they were thinking of how to reinvent the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. They immediately keyed into Gremlin-like creatures that just want to break everything, including each other.[7]
  • Jason Reitman's marching orders for the Mini-Pufts were like mischievous toddlers.[8]
  • Arjen Tuiten was going to have Bill Bryan make one practical Mini-Puft puppet, the one that bites Gary Grooberson, but they ran out of time in production and couldn't make one.[9]
  • The Mini Pufts were the hardest characters for Afterlife's VFX team to nail down.[10]
  • The Moving Picture Company team hand animated the Mini-Pufts and used toddlers as reference to recreate the elements of clumsiness and cuteness.[11]
  • VFX Producer Kerry Joseph and his team studied footage of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the first movie but added more emotion to the eyes of the Mini Pufts.[12][13]
  • The Mini Puft in the middle of the s'more was one of the very first ideas during preproduction of Afterlife.[14]
  • Several Mini Pufts are nods fictional characters:
    • Mary Poppins
    • Pinnochio
    • Ian Malcolm's famous pose from Jurassic Park
    • Terminator's death in Terminator 2.
  • There were hundreds of voice tracks recorded for the Mini-Pufts.[15]
  • The voices of the Mini-Pufts area combination of the production crew, including editor Nate Orloff and lead sound effects designer Chris Terhune, and voice actors.[16][17][18]
  • It is revealed Stay Puft also has graham crackers called Stay Crisp.
  • The Mini-Puft destroyed in the blender was voiced by Will Files on helium.[19]
  • Sarah Natochenny and Shelby Young voiced the Mini-Pufts in uncredited roles.[20][21]
  • Sarah Natochenny was approached by Jason Reitman after he saw three videos she did for Variety Fair about voice acting. A couple days later, she was recording lines for Mini-Pufts.[22]
  • Sarah Natochenny recorded her lines from her closet.[23]
  • The actors picked Mini-Pufts to voice during a session then they would switch and do other ones in the next round.[24]
  • Ira Heiden knew Jason Reitman from playing broomball with him in Culver City. After Heiden heard about Reitman's involvement into a Ghostbusters movie, he emailed him. Heiden was hired to do ADR of various scared background people and ghosts coming out of the pit. After the session on October 16, 2020 was completed, he was asked to stay and was told he was also going to be recording for the Mini-Pufts.[25][26][27]
  • Ira Heiden voiced a Mini-Puft on the Roomba, the Mini-Puft with the jelly bean, the Mini-Puft drooling onto the grill, and one of the Mini-Pufts pushing a button on the blender.[28]
  • At one point, there was talk of changing the look of the Terror Dog. Arjen Tuiten felt strongly against that and wanted to keep the iconic look. He put his foot down and the original look was kept.[29]
  • The large Terror Dog sculpture was led by Norman Cabrera, a creature effects artist, Tanner White, Danny Wagner, and Bryan Ray. As time went on, workers came in sets to work on different aspects of the Terror Dogs.[30]
  • Arjen Tuiten met with Jason Reitman around January 2019 and they quickly hit it off within 10 minutes. Reitman visited Tuiten's shop a week later and talked about some ideas.[31]
  • About a week later, Tuiten got a call asking if he would be willing to do the Terror Dogs as well. He quickly agreed to. Sony gave him access to never-before-seen stills of the original puppets and reference material for the sculptures.[32][33]
  • Tuiten and his team wanted to stay with the process used by the Boss Films crew rather than scanning and milling one out in foam. They started with making a Terror Dog maquette. Steve Koch sculpted the maquette. They photographed it, projected ut on the wall four times the size, made an armature, and used 600 pounds of wet clay. They spent two weeks sculpting.[34]
  • Bill Sturgeon, of Spectral Motion, took lead on the Terror Dog's body skin. All other head foam skins and cosmetic elements were handled in Tuiten's shop.[35]
  • Bill Sturgeon scanned the core and designed all the internal head and body mechanisms then Jurgen Heimann built them.[36]
  • The Terror Dog puppets ended up weighing close to 450 to 500 pounds.[37]
  • Foam latex was chosen over silicon for the Terror Dog puppet due to weight issues. Silicon would have been about 500 pounds heavier.[38]
    • Lacking an oven of proper size, Tuiten turned to Bill Fesh for the foam skin.[39]
  • The Terror Dog's teeth was made with acrylic.[40]
  • The Terror Dog's horns and nails were made with urethane resin.[41][42]
  • Bill Sturgeon placed a linear actuator in the stomach of the Terror Dog puppet to mimic realistic breathing.[43]
  • The Terror Dog drool was actually a product called UltraSlime.[44]
  • The Terror Dog head was operated by around 21 servo motors.[45][46]
  • When Gary Grooberson comes upon Vinz Clortho eating bags of dog food, Jason Reitman didn't think the sound the Vinz crunching the food sounded violent enough, so re-recording mixer Will Files added the sound of a lion eating an animal.[47]
  • The dog food is a callback to the first movie, Chapter 18: Terror on the Tavern, when Louis Tully initially thought someone brought a dog to his party and later he meekly offers it a Milkbone.
  • Vinz eats from Purina Dog Chow Complete Adult with Real Chicken bags.
  • Grooberson was about to call Vinz a nice doggie like Louis did in the first movie but is interrupted by a roar.
  • For the Terror Dogs in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, re-recording mixer Will Files had work with sounds with low fidelity quality. Using the originals as a foundation, they edited it, augmented it, added their own voices pitched down to blend with the animal sounds.[48]
  • Vinz Clortho's clumsy exit was a callback to the first movie, Chapter 17: "Who Brought the Dog?", when he crashed Louis Tully's party.
  • The Terror Dog was a mix of puppetry and CGI.[49]
  • The crew studied various things for the Terror Dog's movements, including the Running of the Bulls and how the bulls regained their footing after smashing storefronts.[50]
  • Grooberson running to his car and Vinz catching up was a night shoot in the Deerfoot City Walmart parking lot.
  • Like Louis Tully, Grooberson has an awkward moment before he is possessed. The weight of Vinz causes his tires to go flat.
  • Jason Reitman was adamant about the visual effects team following Tuiten's sculpture so the maquette and sculptures were scanned and used for their models.[51]
  • The interior of Spinners Roller Hop is from the set at First Avenue and Sixth Street in Beisker, Alberta.[52]
  • As the other teenagers look over Phoebe, Podcast, Trevor, and Lucky's booth as they discuss the map, it mirrors when the Ghostbusters' cellmates started to get interested in their conversation about 550 Central Park West and Gozer in the first movie, Ghostbusters (Chapter 22): Holding Cell|Chapter 22: Holding Cell]].
  • Orlando is mentioned by Podcast.
  • Lucky confirms Ivo Shandor built everything in Summerville, including the mine, the foundry, the school, the library.
  • 550 Central Park West is alluded to.
  • The finale of the first movie is once again mentioned.

I do a lot of voice work but whatever it takes, I want to be a part of this movie.' He was very busy and working, you know, and I figured you know whatever, so I get a message saying 'Ira, oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, you know it's been so crazy busy but yes, I definitely want you to be a part of this and he said we're going to start you off doing some ADR work I said 'That's great. I went to Sony and met with Jason and within the first ten minutes, we just instantly hit it off. He's only two or three years older than I am. I guess we're in the same age range. And he knew exactly what I was talking about and the other way around. And I think a week later, he came by my shop just to check the place out. We talked about some ideas and it went very fast from that."

It was sculpted by Steve Koch, a very talented sculptor, and we followed everything, that's again, to reference to Andy Cook and once we had that done and it was approved, we-Nowadays, we could probably scan it and mill one out in foam. The process is a lot faster and every accurate but I felt, also for my own crew, this was such a special moment and to capture that handcraft and feel within the creatures, I felt 'Let's just sculpt it.' In other words, we'll photograph the maquette, we'll project it on the wall to four times the size, we'll make an armature and we'll get 600 pounds of wet clay like they did back then. And we did. And we had the best two weeks sculpting that."
