Ghost Corps is a subsidiary of Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. formed in March of 2015 to focus on expanding the Ghostbusters brand with live-action feature films, animated motion pictures, television, merchandise and other new entertainment products.

Formation[]

On March 9, 2015, it was reported the Ghost Corps production company was formed within Sony Pictures. Principals include Ivan Reitman, Dan Aykroyd, Reitman's longtime Montecito partner Tom Pollock, Ali Bell and Alex Plapinger, and Sony. Ghost Corps would be tasked with new branding opportunities for Ghostbusters in ways that will include different films, TV shows, and merchandise. Reitman commented the movie was born out of an idea for an expanded universe that was part of the franchise Bible put together when the first film was being done in 1984. [1]

On July 6, 2016, in an interview, Ivan Reitman appeared to allude to what led to the formation of Ghost Corps. No Ghostbusters movies could be done in the past 20 or so years without unanimous approval from Reitman, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Bill Murray. When work resumed on trying to get a third movie done in the early 2010s, the plan was for Sony to pay for a draft and it would get made. It didn't happen. A business deal was done and Sony bought ultimate control of Ghostbusters. Reitman felt there was a future for Ghostbusters to expand into other movies and avenues. Once the deal was finished, Sony was then free to solicit pitches from other filmmakers. [2]

On July 14, 2016, Ivan Reitman confirmed the transfer of rights and formation of Ghost Corps was prior to the 2016 movie being greenlit. [3]

On November 19, 2015, another photo of the Ghost Corps office's Firehouse exterior was posted online. [6]

On December 12, 2015, an album of photos taken during construction of the office was posted. [7]

On December 13, 2015, the short video of the Ecto-1 cars was official released. [8] Some photos of them were posted, too. [9]

On December 15, 2015, a photo of the main office interior was posted. Several merchandise is on display such as the Ghostbusters: The Board Game and Ghostbusters Get Real #1 to Ghostbusters Get Real #4. Framed posters of the two movies are separated by a mounted head of a Terror Dog. [10]

Community Relations[]

In early 2016, Ghost Corps started accepting applications from fan franchises and individuals via a form on their Facebook page. [11] Those who registered would receive a small "Ghost Corps Cadet" pin in the mail. [12] Franchises would also receive a certificate, personally signed by Ivan Reitman. [13] [14]

On June 5, 2015, Paul Feig confirmed he is communicating to avoid overlap with the movie he is directing. [15] [16]

On July 15, 2015, in a summary about the Ghostbusters panel from San Diego Comic Con, Tom Waltz cited Erik Burnham and Dan Schoening's run on Ghostbusters as a possible inspiration for Aykroyd and Reitman's Ghost Corps.

On August 7, 2015, in an interview, when asked about making a cameo as a ghost, Dan Aykroyd indirectly mentioned other films saying, "I'd have loved to play a ghost in the movie but...ah...maybe in one of the future ones being done I might be able to play a ghost." [17]

On April 28, 2016, Paul Feig revealed there are talks of how to connect the 2016 movie to the original movies. [18]

On July 11, 2016, in an interview last week, Ivan Reitman stated much of what Ghost Corps will do with Ghostbusters is 'up in the air.' Whether or not all of the current and potential properties will be in a shared universe has not been absolutely decided yet. Reitman admitted he thinks "some kind of continuity and some kind of relationship should be created, and we're working on that." The decision was always going to be made after the 2016 movie came out and reaffirmed there are a number of things already in the works. [19]

On July 15, 2016, Ivan Reitman mentioned other announcements are coming soon. [20]

On July 17, 2016, Josh Greenstein, Sony's marketing and distribution chief, stated, "There absolutely will be more [films]." [21] In an interview, Ivan Reitman admitted he and Aykroyd talked about mining some ideas for future projects from the Ghost Smashers script but couldn't find his copy of it and nor could Aykroyd find his. They went to CAA and spoke to a mutual lawyer who read a draft and confirmed "It was in outer space and there were lots of different Ghostbusters." [22]

On November 22, 2016, Ivan Reitman commented "there's going to be many other Ghostbusters movies, they're just in development right now" when asked about a sequel to Ghostbusters (2016). [23]

On June 8, 2017, Ivan Reitman noted fans' strong desire to see the movies connected, noted they are working on where to take the franchise next, and mused about franchises all over the world with the head office still being in New York. [24]

On July 6, 2017, the full Thursday schedule of San Diego Comic Con was released. A Ghostbusters panel via IDW Publishing titled "Ghostbusters 101: A Ghostbusters Panel Of Biblical Proportions!" was set to take place on July 20 from 10:15 to 11:15 am in Room 6DE. Ivan Reitman joins IDW Publishing's Erik Burnham, Dan Schoening and Tom Waltz. In addition to discussion about the comic, it was also revealed the panel would also address "future plans for major events from Ghost Corps that will add to the beloved brand's canon, bringing the different Ghostbusters worlds together like never before!"" [25] [26]

On July 20, 2017, while on the Ghostbusters 101 panel at San Diego Comic Con, Reitman mentioned they explored the idea of having a ghost character as a Ghostbuster. [27] When asked if CG could be used to recreate a character like what was done in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" with the original case, Reitman revealed it's something they're thinking about. [28]

On July 23, 2017, during the Empire Podcast, Ivan Reitman mentioned his real objective is to not have two separate universes and envisions a scenario where the group from Answer The Call has taken over from the original movies. [29]

On April 27, 2018, Dan Aykroyd commented Ghost Corps has "three hot ideas" for movies. [30]

On June 28, 2018, Ghost Corps released an 11 second video of an unused extended logo sequence done for Ghostbusters: Answer The Call. [31]

On May 17, 2019, Dan Aykroyd mentioned there is one or two concepts they want to develop into movies after the 2020 movie comes out then revisit a prequel set in 1969 he pitched to Jason Reitman.[32]

On November 20, 2021, Dan Aykroyd confirmed he still has to grant theatrical rights for Ghostbusters movies to be made because he has the proprietary rights.[33]

On February 3, 2022, Phil Lord and Chris Miller did not confirm they worked on a permutation of Ghostbusters III but did admit they did develop a Ghostbusters project based on an idea a "friend" had. When asked if it could still be made, they commented their project was "a little sideways" of what Ivan and Jason Reitman did with Ghostbusters: Afterlife.[34]

On May 20, 2022, in an interview in Deadline's Disruptors, Tim Rothman was asked "Will you do more Ghostbusters?" and he replied, "Yes, we will."[35]

On January 17, 2024, in a feature in the March 2024 issue of Empire, Gil Kenan admitted that after Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, "Jason and I definitely have a sense of where the story could go from here." Ernie Hudson commented, "We've been focused on America, but there are ghosts all over the planet. I'd like to see us expand to other countries" and Jason Reitman added, "Now we're back in the Firehouse, there are infinite ghost stories that could be told... and not just in Manhattan – all around the world."[36]

On February 28, 2024, in a feature in the March 2024 issue of Total Film, Gil Kenan commented, "Jason and I really love Ghostbusters. We love these characters and we would be really happy if audiences were down to keep going on adventures with them. If audiences feel this way, then we know what the next stories are going to be."[37]

On March 21, 2024, in an interview, Gil Kenan confirmed Phoebe Spengler would continue to be the star if another movie is made. He also hinted they have an idea of where Oscar is and would love to include Dana in future stories.[38]

On March 23, 2024, Gil Kenan commented Frozen Empire sets up threads for future stories saying, "Even though we've seen it beginning to spill out into the city again, it was important to tee up the fact that there are threads that run like ribbons in every direction out from this story." Dan Aykroyd mentioned he penned a "neat story" featuring Phoebe where the original team has "stepped back a little" and "the kids have to handle things on their own."[39]

On March 24, 2024, in an interview, Gil Kenan hinted he and Jason Reitman already have an idea about a "really interesting and terrifying" villain but it would not necessarily be in the same movie as Ghostbusters branching out in the world.[40] When asked if there could be bad, unethical Ghostbusters, Kenan laughed and replied, "You never know."

On March 25, 2024, Gil Kenan was quoted saying there's more story to tell with the Mini-Pufts.[41]

On March 29, 2024, when asked if he ever consulted for Ghost Corps, Erik Burnham revealed he "did pitch in on some things previous to Afterlife."[42]

List of Reported Films[]

Untitled Second Film[]

On March 9, 2015, it was reported a second Ghostbusters film was in the works. Joe and Anthony Russo are looking to direct and produce but aren't confirmed, Drew Pearce will write and Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, and Peter Kiernan were attached to produce with hope Tatum will play one of the Ghostbusters. The broad plan is to have the Russo brothers film in summer 2016 and the movie would release in 2017. [43] It was clarified the team was not going to be all-male and the movie is not "guy-centric." First of all, this new Ghostbusters movie isn't all-male. It isn't 'guy-centric.' The concept of the movie is influenced by the chemistry between real-life friends Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt and their desire to make this movie together. The movie will be complementary to the Paul Feig film. Both would be part of a shared universe and not be two franchises running in tandem. [44]

On March 14, 2015, Drew Pearce confirmed he was writing the script. [45]

On May 18, 2015, the June 2015 GQ cover story with Chris Pratt was posted online. In it Pratt denied any involvement in the film and claimed no one ever spoke to him about it. [46]

On June 23, 2015, Channing Tatum confirmed Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd are involved but admitted the movie is still up in the air and still in a gestation period. [47]

On June 25, 2015, Reid Carolin, Tatum's producing partner and screenwriter on both "Magic Mike" films, revealed the movie is not going to be done. Carolin stated, "We’re not doing that anymore" and "There's a lot of things going on with that brand and I just feel like it's over-saturated." [48]

On July 24, 2015, Drew Pearce revealed the first draft he turned in included his idea that gave ability to connect every movie. He clarified his work on Ghostbusters is done and he's doing a new project. [49]

On July 29, 2015, Drew Pearce confirmed he finished his work in the last couple weeks. [50] Pearce later clarified that he only wrote a bible. There is no script yet. [51] The team has both men and women. And, Pearce also teases 'ghosts of all classes I-VII.' [52]

On March 17, 2016, Joe Russo clarified there was a point when both Paul Feig and the Russo Brothers were in talks with Sony. Feig was further along and closed his deal first. Once the Russo Brothers signed on for the two Avengers: Infinity War movies, it took them off the table for any potential work on Ghostbusters. [53]

On April 28, 2016, it was reported in the EMPIRE June 2016 issue, Ivan Reitman commented this was a 'futuristic film' and 'involved different teams of Ghostbusters.' He confirmed it was on hold but concluded 'we'll see what happens with that.' [54]

On July 11, 2016, in an interview last week, Ivan Reitman stated the Pratt-Tatum rumors were false. Reitman never met with Pratt nor Tatum and there is no script. Pearce did a 30 page treatment that was later abandoned. One of the actors' managers expressed interest. Conspiracy and rumor spread online. [55]

Third Film Crossover[]

On March 9, 2015, it was reported there is hope both the Feig and Russo films would cross over in a third film like "Marvel's The Avengers." The shared universe continuity would become clear in this team-up film. [56]

Fourth Film Prequel[]

On March 9, 2015, it was reported there was also a prequel film being planned. It would take place before the Feig and Russo films. It won't have anything to do with the original Ghostbusters. [57]

Animated Movie[]

On August 14, 2020, Michael Kurinsky posted development art of four entities depicted as Ghostbusters and a giant tube with the No logo.[58][59]

On July 19, 2023, Michael Kurinsky estimated he worked on the development art in 2016.[60]

Ghostbusters High Film[]

On May 17, 2019, Dan Aykroyd revealed the first movie he discussed with Jason Reitman was around 2017. It was a "Ghostbusters High" movie set in 1969 in New Jersey and shows how Peter, Ray, and Egon met. The plan was to do as "a glorified feature or pilot" within the next five years with the idea it could lead to a television project.[61]

Fifth Film[]

On July 21, 2023, Dan Aykroyd commented he had an idea for a fifth film in the original movie continuity that he would set in the United Kingdom.[62]

List of Reported Series[]

Untitled Streaming Series[]

On June 22, 2020, it was rumored a Netflix series was in negotiations. It would start with the Answer The Call Ghostbusters then the prime continuity then other iterations, and conclude in a crossover. Holtzmann would be focused on and her LGBTQ+ status would come up. It is influenced by the multiverse created in the IDW Publishing canon.[63]

On November 12, 2021, it was rumored a series is in development and the plan is to sell it to a major streaming service.[64]

Comic[]

On December 21, 2016, Erik Burnham commented the upcoming Ghostbusters 101 mini-series was a story requested by both the fans and Ghost Corps. [65] Ivan Reitman commented he always wanted to meld the two worlds and thinks it will be fun and thinks it will be important in the future to bring it back as a single universe. [66] [67]

Nothing could be done without our unanimous approval. It's probably one of the reasons that nothing got done for 20 years. Trying to get unanimity among four very creative and individualistic people is frankly impossible. We just let it go until we started working on the [new film]. It was done because the studio decided they would try to entice us into it by paying for a draft and hoping that we would get it done. What I tried to do was make a business deal in which we all gave up this ultimate control and sold it to the studio so that they could continue. I always felt that there was a future for Ghostbusters. It's such a wonderful idea and there was an opportunity for it to expand into other films and into other things ... Once that happened, the studio was open to other filmmakers trying to make it."

And I said, 'Jesus, how did we lose it?'...I went to see if CAA had it because that was the agency that represented both of us, and it'd be great to look at it again because Dan and I remember it differently now. I said to him recently, 'It took place in outer space,' and he said, 'No it didn't.' I said, 'Yes, it did. It took place in outer space and there were lots of different Ghostbusters.' And I actually brought forth a couple of different men like our mutual lawyer who had read that early draft, and he said, 'It was in outer space and there were lots of different Ghostbusters.' So I would definitely want to connect to all of that...What we've been doing a lot of is thinking about the franchise rights for Ghostbusters. Because Ghostbusters, that idea doesn't have to just take place in New York, it can happen over the world. I thank it would be really cool to see Korean ghosts or Chinese ghosts. All those great traditions in the world have all these tales and things those people are afraid of. To have a sort of local group of Ghostbusters that tie with the head office in New York would be fun."

We agree that the single most important decision we had to make at the start of this process was to take this from something that was a group of people who came together with a shared purpose, which was starting a business, to making it about a family saga with one character at the center of it. And that was Phoebe Spengler. So watching her character mature in lockstep with Mckenna as a young performer is one of the joys of telling a story that spans years. In real time, we’re seeing her and her character mature, and that means that the obstacles and the personal stakes mature and develop in equal measure. It’s a really fun way to tell a story because it feels like it is growing in front of your eyes, and so we’re hoping we get to tell the rest of that story."

He’d done a thirty page treatment that was later abandoned, but I think [the Pratt Tatum thing] was meant to be this approach. And I think one of the managers of one of those guys had mentioned an interest in one day doing something like that. And I think that got blown up into this conspiracy that the studio didn’t believe in the Paul Feig version. We were all in on the Paul Feig version. 61. CTV News "Aykroyd eyes making 'Ghostbusters' prequel - for 'as little as we can spend'" 5/17/19 Dan Aykroyd says: "Just within two years. Although I've written "Ghostbusters High," where they meet in New Jersey in 1969 and we're looking to do that as probably a glorified feature or pilot within the next maybe five years.... And it would lead to a television project and I thought of him immediately for that. It's on his desk but that's years away from the current project. But it's a neat idea for a prequel. Imagine casting the three characters as teenagers! Way, way down, though we have other stuff after the Jason Reitman-helmed movie. We have at least one or two other concepts for the "Ghostbusters" and then we'll look at doing the prequel, which will be a perfect button on all we've done up to that point."

There are lots of ghosts and mythical creatures in Scotland."
