Ichabod Crane[1] is the inspiration for Washington Irving's tale, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."

History[]

In the early 19th century, Ichabod Crane was employed in the town of Sleepy Hollow. Irving's tale posits him as a moral and upright schoolteacher, but immoral and superstitious when he isn't working. After a failed flirtation with Katrina Van Tassel, daughter of a wealthy farmer, Crane leaves for home but is pursued by the Headless Horseman.

The following morning, townspeople found Crane's horse and pieces of a pumpkin. Unknown to all, Crane survived and crawled from the river. He soon started a family and had a son. 20 years later, the son of Crane was also pursued by the Horseman.[2] Thus, a family curse began in which the entity would stalk each descendant of Ichabod Crane.[3][4] It went on until the mid-1980s when the Ghostbusters aided Crane's latest descendant, Kate, in capturing the Horseman.
