Note: The name Jennifer Adams applies only to IDW Comics Canon.
Jennifer[1] (also known as Female Student and Jennifer "Jenny" Adams in IDW Canon only)[2][3] was one of the students at Columbia University who participated in Dr. Peter Venkman's study on the effects of negative reinforcement on ESP ability.

Jennifer was paid $5 to guess the image on the back side of Zener cards that Dr. Venkman held up. For the fourth card, Peter chose a circle and she guessed a star. For the fifth card, Peter chose a plus sign and she guessed a figure eight. Peter pretended to be surprised again. He remarked she was five for five. He asked if she could see the card. Peter moved the card around and squinted. The other volunteer, a male student, tried looking from her vantage point. Jennifer smiled and swore she wasn't cheating, the answers were coming to her. Though she never guessed any correctly, Dr. Venkman told her that she was correct, while he shocked the male student even when he got the answer right on the sixth card. After the male student flipped out and quit, Peter sat down next to Jennifer. He warned Jennifer to get used to that kind of resentment because her ability was going to provoke some people. Jennifer asked Peter if he really thought she had a gift. Peter promised her she was no fluke.
The experiment was cut short when Dr. Ray Stantz interrupted the two to take Dr. Venkman to the New York City Public Library to investigate the Library ghost. Peter crept over to Ray, hopped off the floor, and cartoonishly slapped him on the head as he told him he was right in the middle of something. He was standing, pretending to be talking normally to Ray by the time Jennifer peaked over. Peter insisted he needed a little more time with Jennifer and asked him he could come back in an hour or hour and a half. Ray told him about what happened at the library and he was coming, too. She and Dr. Venkman agreed to meet later that night at 8 pm to continue with the study. Peter even pretended he was going to say 8, too. He called her a legitimate phenomenon. She giggled.

For her book about the Ghostbusters, Rebecca Morales went to Columbia University a few weeks after Gozer was defeated and interviewed Jennifer Adams and Bob Douglas in a cafeteria. Jennifer told Rebecca how Peter took a great interest in her and her psychic gifts but she was saddened when he left the University.
Jennifer pursued a career as a psychic and opened a business in the East Village called Village Psychic. She became a seasoned practitioner. Some years later, Ray Stantz paid her a visit to get a reading out of curiosity in regard to the future. She drew from her Tarot Cards and the first one to come up was the Death Card. While it usually signaled a form of change, Jennifer was alarmed it was for the future of a Ghostbuster. Ray had to cut the session short and take a rain check after he was called away on a case. Jennifer was curious and drew the next card. To her shock, it was the Tower Card.

- In the final shooting script, Jennifer is simply described as "a very beautiful Coed."[4]
- When Jennifer Runyon filmed her scene, hair and make up decided she didn't need wardrobe, didn't need makeup, and didn't need her hair done. Runyon wished that if she knew that would happen she would have blow dried her hair better that day.[5]
- Jennifer was originally planned to play a role in the first two issues of James Eatock and Dan Schoening's rejected ten-issue IDW comics pitch, having summoned the demon Ereshkigal to get revenge on Peter.[6][7]
- On page 19 of Ghostbusters Volume 1 Issue #7, to the left of Dean Yeager's card is a card from Jennifer and the interior references the 8 o'clock appointment Peter made with her before he went to the library with Ray.
- As in the movie, a call about a ghost interrupts a session with Jennifer in Ghostbusters International #1.
- On page 1 of Ghostbusters Year One Issue #2:
- Jennifer's last name in the IDW Canon is revealed to be Adams.
- Jennifer's outfit is based on one worn by Jennifer Runyon's character Heather Merriweather in "Up The Creek" (1984).
- Jennifer brings up Peter convincing her of her psychic ability in Chapter 2 "Shock The Nerd" of the first movie.
- On Cover RI of Ghostbusters Year One Issue #3, a nod to the cover of Batman #251, Jennifer and Male Student replaces Batman.
