The Mini-Pufts are animated Stay Puft Marshmallows originating from a Walmart in the Summerville area.

History

Primary Canon History

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

In June of 2021, the night after releasing Vinz Clortho by accident, Gary Grooberson went to the local Walmart and headed to the frozen foods aisle. He selected a Baskin-Robbins Jamoca ice cream then went to another aisle and found a bottle of blue velvet frosting. He walked past the Stay Puft Marshmallows. One of the 10-ounce bags started moving on the shelf like something was in it. Gary doubled back and stared at the bag. To his shock, a little marshmallow critter tore a hole and came out of the bag. It yawned and rubbed its eyes. It saw Gary, smiled, and stepped forward, but it fell off the bag and landed on its face. It stood up and the imprint of the shelf vanished. It stepped forward. Gary was in awe. He laughed and waved to it. It marched forward but stopped at the edge of the shelf. It turned around and looked at its surroundings. Gary poked its butt. The Mini-Puft frowned, turned around, and smiled. The Mini-Puft suddenly bit Grooberson's index finger.

More Mini-Pufts burst out of bags. A group of Mini-Pufts on a Roomba drove into Gary's left shoe. One hopped onboard the Roomba and they ram into the shelving on the opposite side. Gary realized there were tons of Mini-Pufts all over the aisle. The Roomba ran one over and left a streak as it drove out of the aisle. A few floated onto the shelf of Stay Puft Marshmallows with little paper umbrellas. One impaled another Mini-Pufts' head from behind. It pulled on the handle and the umbrella closed on its head. One punted a regular marshmallow off the shelf. Gary was horrified and hurried past a Fourth of July themed display for grills. A lone Mini-Puft on a grill threw its hat like a discus onto another grill populated with many Mini-Pufts. One jabbed two Mini-Pufts with a skewer. One on the dial managed to turn the grill on. A Mini-Puft on top melted. One lied on its stomach and watched its spit drift down. The Mini-Pufts on the skewer roasted. A Mini-Puft kicked the head off another. Another forced a Mini-Puft onto a Stay Crisp Graham Cracker and laid a Hershey bar on top of it. Several carried a blow torch over and heated up the chocolate bar on top of their comrade. Two Mini-Pufts pushed a blender off a shelf with one inside. Another Mini-Puft landed inside another blender. They raced over. One pushed the other off the shelf then turned the blender on and watched as the Mini-Puft inside levitated. The one on the shelf mashed buttons. A Mini-Puft came up from behind and headbutted the other into the buttons. The Mini-Puft inside splattered. Gary came out an aisle then froze because Vinz Clortho was across from him with his head in a Purina Dog Chow bag scarfing away. Gary quietly backed up. The Mini-Pufts on the Roomba crashed into his shoe then drove on. Vinz lifted its head out of the bag and stared at Gary then chased after him.

The next night, the Mini-Pufts appeared during the final battle against Gozer at the Farmhouse. They infiltrated the Ecto-1 and sabotaged the Proton Pack integrated in the gunner. Trevor Spengler's role in the plan to trap Gozer was to help confine Gozer in a Proton Stream after Lucky Domingo fired first. He discovered his Particle Thrower was inoperable so he looked at the back of the seat and saw several Mini-Pufts disabling the pack. Podcast saw one on his left cuff and screamed. They cheered when Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore arrived to confront Gozer. Podcast found the P.K.E. Meter on the floor and discovered the taser function. He watched as the Mini-Puft atop the P.K.E. Meter was tasered and blew up. The other Mini-Pufts became scared, stopped their sabotage attempts and attempted to flee. Trevor peeked inside. Podcast zapped more Mini-Pufts. The Proton Pack became operational again. As Gozer was in the process of getting trapped, the remaining Mini-Pufts overheated and exploded. Podcast emerged from the Ecto-1 covered in marshmallow residue. Ray congratulated him on single-handedly defeating a manifestation of Gozer.

Between Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Frozen Empire

Ray Stantz smuggled several Mini-Pufts back with him to New York City after the Summerville incident and kept them in the basement of Ray's Occult Books.[3] They began to multiply. Podcast speculated they could be mating.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

In the summer of 2024, Phoebe Spengler noticed a Mini-Puft on a table in the Ray's Occult basement but Podcast promptly smashed it with a shoe. He told Phoebe that Ray smuggled some back from Summerville and shared his mating theory. One had its arm in a pencil sharpener while standing on another, a Puft was impaled on sharpener's handle while two turned it. One was in a jar containing a blue substance, one stretched in a box, others were on books, one rode on a horse figure, Pufts dropped on Pufts on shelves, one Puft was decapitated, Pufts with a stapler fired staples at other Pufts, a Puft was hit with a pencil, one stood in front of a magnifying glass, one was stabbed in the gut with a pencil after it tossed it up in the air, two played with a digital camera, one threw M&Ms into the mouth of another, one was on fire, and one chewed on a Duracell 9V battery. The Puft with its arm in the pencil sharpener waved at Phoebe and Podast. Phoebe found it disugsting. After Nadeem Razmaadi entered the store with box that contained the Orb of Garraka, the Mini-Pufts suddenly ran away and hid.

Days later, at the Paranormal Research Center, Lars Pinfield demonstrated the Orb of Garraka's power of thought transference on Mini-Pufts beind held in a containment terrarium. Using a grabber claw, Lars held the Orb against the terrarium. The Mini-Pufts violently jumped against the glass pane, smashing themselves flat. Podcast recorded it on his phone.

Tertiary Canon History

Ghostbusters: Afterlife ScARe

After the recruit acquired a pair of Ecto Goggles, Mini-Pufts appeared and engaged the recruit, lobbing chunks of marshmallow goo at the recruit. After defeating 101 Mini-Pufts, several more Pufts attempted a group attack before falling through a hole in the ground.

Mini-Pufts were eventually freed from the Containment Unit by Gozer and participated in the climatic showdown, serving as reinforcements for Vinz Clortho and the Bug-Eye Ghost. However, they were recaptured by the recruit using the Trap Field.

Animated clumps of adorable marshmallow. How or why they have chosen now to make their presence known is anyone's guess. While they don't cause any damage, they will render your equipment unusable until they are disposed of.

Tips

Listen for the tell-tale sound of joyful chewiness. Getting too close to a bag will set it off, but if you're quick you might be able to dodge the worst of it.

Tertiary Canon Classification

In Ghostbusters: Afterlife ScARe, Mini-Pufts are Class 5s.

Trivia

Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trivia

  • Incidentally, miniature versions of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man previously appeared in The Real Ghostbusters: The Return of Mr. Stay Puft comic in June 1989 with the Mini Stay Puft men, bestial Marshmallow Minis in Ghostbusters: The Video Game, and Mini Pufts in the Ghostbusters: Deviation comic in 2016.
  • Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan didn't want to do another giant entity when they were thinking of how to reinvent the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. They immediately keyed into Gremlin-like creatures that just want to break everything, including each other.[6]
  • Jason Reitman's marching orders for the Mini-Pufts were like mischievous toddlers.[7]
  • Arjen Tuiten,Special Make-Up & Live Acton Creature Effects Designer, was going to have Bill Bryan make one practical Mini-Puft puppet, the one that bites Gary Grooberson, but they ran out of time in production and couldn't make one.[8]
  • The Mini Pufts were the hardest characters for Afterlife's VFX team to nail down.[9]
  • The Moving Picture Company team hand animated the Mini-Pufts and used toddlers as reference to recreate the elements of clumsiness and cuteness.[10]
  • VFX Producer Kerry Joseph and his team studied footage of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the first movie but added more emotion to the eyes of the Mini Pufts.[11][12]
  • The Mini Puft in the middle of the s'more was one of the very first ideas that came up during pre-production of Ghostbusters: Afterlife.[13]
  • Several Mini Pufts are nods to fictional characters:
    • Mary Poppins
    • Pinnochio
    • Ian Malcolm's famous pose from Jurassic Park
    • Terminator's death in Terminator 2.
  • There were hundreds of voice tracks recorded for the Mini-Pufts.[14]
  • The actors picked Mini-Pufts to voice during a session then they would switch and do other ones.[15]
  • Logan Kim lost his voice after filming the scene where he has to scream and taser Mini-Pufts in Ecto-1. Some marshmallow got flung into his eye.[16]
  • The voices of the Mini-Pufts area combination of the production crew, including editor Nate Orloff and lead sound effects designer Chris Terhune, and voice actors.[17][18][19]
  • The Mini-Puft destroyed in the blender was voiced by supervising sound editor Will Files on helium.[20]
  • Sarah Natochenny and Shelby Young voiced Mini-Pufts in uncredited roles.[21][22]
  • Sarah Natochenny was approached by Jason Reitman after he saw three videos she did for Variety Fair about voice acting. A couple days later, she was recording lines for Mini-Pufts.[23]
  • Sarah Natochenny recorded her lines from her closet.[24]
  • Ira Heiden knew Jason Reitman from playing broomball with him in Culver City. After Heiden heard about Reitman's involvement into a Ghostbusters movie, he emailed him. Heiden was hired to do ADR of various scared background people and ghosts coming out of the pit. After the session on October 16, 2020 was completed, he was asked to stay and was told he was also going to be recording for the Mini-Pufts.[25][26][27]
  • Ira Heiden voiced a Mini-Puft on the Roomba, the Mini-Puft with the jelly bean, the Mini-Puft drooling onto the grill, and one of the Mini-Pufts pushing a button on the blender.[28]
  • Podcast emerges from Ecto-1 covered in the Mini-Pufts' marshmallow residue much like three of the Ghostbusters at the end of the first movie, Chapter 28: Crossing Streams.
  • It took an hour to apply the Mini-Puft marshmallow residue to Logan Kim. It was a substance with cornstarch in it. Some would be glued to his face. A separate Ecto Goggles prop was used that was covered in the substance. After awhile, it would harden like Jell-O and the flightsuit would get really most and uncomfortable.[29]
  • In the film's post-credits scene, a variation of the No-Ghost logo appears but with a Mini-Puft replacing the Icon Ghost.
  • There is a deleted scene of the Mini-Pufts in Wertheimer's Hardware. At one point, they were going to shoot a nail gun.[30][31][Note 1]

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Trivia

  • Armorer Doug McCarthy made two Mini-Puft moving puppets for actors to react to during filming of Frozen Empire. Gil Kenan might have kept one of them.[32]

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Trivia

  • In Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, on the second floor of the Firehouse, the text box for the bag of Stay Puft Marshmallows on the counter alludes to the Mini-Pufts warning people to "check 'em for eyes and mouths before you eat them."
