The Trap Field[1] is set of 198 Traps buried under a dirt field outside the Farmhouse in Summerville.

History[]

Primary Canon History[]

Before Ghostbusters Afterlife[]

One of the projects Egon Spengler worked on in Summerville to prevent the end of the world was a more permanent solution: a massive Trap field laid out in the front of his property, built from all of the Traps he had taken when he abandoned the Ghostbusters and left New York City in Ecto-1.[2][3][4] Locals often observed him working land but never planting anything, earned him the nickname "Dirt Farmer". The Trap Field was connected to three big silos that acted as a capacitor. Once activated with a lever on the porch, the silo towers could hold a charge for one moment but in that one moment, they could power the hundreds of Traps.[5][6] Egon also installed a Trap pedal on the porch to open the Traps.

Ghostbusters Afterlife[]

In June of 2021, Egon Spengler captured Vinz Clortho in a Trap and sped out of the Shandor Mining Company in a company truck. On the road to the Farmhouse, Zuul attacked the truck and caused it to flip several times into a barley field. Egon hobbled out of the field with the Trap and made it to the Farmhouse. He threw the lever upwards and the three capacitor silos surged on. Zuul, still invisible, stepped out of the field. Egon held out the Trap. The creature took several steps forward. Egon stepped on a trap pedal but the capacitors died out. He tried again several times but nothing happened. He passed away soon after.

Several days later, after Zuul fled the Farmhouse in possession of Callie Spengler as her host body, Phoebe Spengler went outside. She looked at the word "Dirt" painted on the side of the barn and realized something. She went on her knees and dug the dirt field with her hands. She pulled up a black wire. Podcast asked what it was. Phoebe realized the farm was really a trap. She developed a strategy to capture Zuul and lure Gozer to the Trap Field and trap it. Since Gozer needed both Zuul and Vinz to maintain form on the physical plane, it would have no choice but to pursue them. The first part of the plan went accordingly. Phoebe and Callie went to the porch. Gozer, in a disembodied form, Phoebe held out the Trap. She told Callie to pull the lever. Callie looked around, saw it, and pulled it. The capacitors surged on. Gozer turned and looked at the capacitor silos. The Traps buried in the field hummed on.

Lucky Domingo kicked the front door open with a Proton Pack on. She fired and wrangled Gozer. Trevor Spengler came out of the Ecto-1 on the gunner seat but his thrower failed to fire because Mini-Pufts sabotaged the pack. Phoebe quickly ordered Callie to hit the pedal. Callie stomped the pedal. The red lights on hundreds of buried Traps turned on but the capacitors went offline. Gozer freed Zuul, who then possessed Lucky. Luckily, Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, and Winston Zeddemore arrived and took on Gozer. Eventually, Podcast got the gunner seat pack operational again after destroying Mini-Pufts with the P.K.E. Meter's taser. Trevor aimed at Gozer at first, but changed his mind and fired at the capacitors. The Traps hummed back on. Callie ran up to the porch and stomped the pedal. The Traps successfully captured every entity above and on the property, including Gozer. Phoebe ran to the field, went on her knees, and touched one of the Traps and suffered a minor zap.

Trivia[]

  • The lever for the Trap Field was changed at the last minute. A post was switched out to make it 4x4.[7]
  • The props in the Trap Field are Spirit brand Ghost Traps. There were 198 of them used.[8][9][10]
  • A team in Los Angeles and a team in Calgary worked on the Trap Field props. They run off a DMX Light Controller.[11]
  • The scene where Phoebe explains to Trevor what a capacitor is was inspired by a time when Adam Savage once explained to Jason Reitman what a capacitor was. On the day of filming the scene, Reitman texted Savage to make sure that was the right way to say it. Savage texted back two different reads to use.[12][13]

We had a team in Los Angeles and a team here in Calgary and the Los Angeles team did all the computer work on the boards. We're running it off a DMX controller like a lighting controller and that's where all these boxes came in so we just--they did their end, we did our end and we got here, we met in the middle and plugged it all in and did a little tweaking and programming."

How ghostbusting equipment would actually work and there is a line where Phoebe is explaining to Trevor what a capacitor it-is and is based on the moment in which you told me what the f***ing capacitor was."
