Garraka is a phantom god that wishes to destroy humankind and bring about a new Ice Age in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. In Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, he is an Overlord entity first available with the fifth DLC on March 26, 2024. Garakka unlocks after the Garakka Ghost Bounty is completed.
History[]
Primary Canon History[]
Before Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire[]
4000 years ago, around 1976 BCE, Samudari was a bloodthirsty king who wished to rule Asia. Garraka served Samudari and together, they conquered half of central Asia. One noteworthy military campaign was called the Battle of the Seven Armies. Samudari became suspicious of Garraka's ambitions and had him captured, branded, broken, and disfigured. His horns, the source of his greatest strength, were forcibly ripped from his head. Garraka waged war on humanity and went on a murder spree. He planned to raise an undead army, wage war with humans, and bring about a second Ice Age. He channeled human's fears into a weapon that became known as the Death Chill. A roving band of mythical spirit catchers known as Fire Masters shattered the Death Chill then used fire and brass to trap Garraka inside an orb.
In mid-July 1904, the Manhattan Adventurers Society held a gathering at their headquarters in New York. They took out the orb and played a recording of the chant which purportedly opened the orb. The Death Chill froze the room and everyone in it. A lone female Fire Master resealed Garraka in the orb before he could escape. Hook & Ladder Company 8, who were called to the Society headquarters, entered the room and noticed her, then slowly approached her. She suddenly opened her eyes and startled them as the orb closed up. The orb stayed in her possession in New York. She kept it in a secret brass room behind her apartment's pantry.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire[]
In the summer of 2024, the woman's grandson Nadeem Razmaadi found the secret room by accident and sold some of the items and orb for quick cash to Ray Stantz, unaware of their significance or true purpose. The orb damaged part of Ray's counter and frightened the Mini-Pufts in the basement enough that they ceased their usual destructive acts and hid. Garraka set its sights on the ghosts in the Ghostbusters' Containment Unit. The next night, the orb resisted the Ionic Separator's extraction and caused a black out in the Paranormal Research Center. Lars Pinfield grabbed the orb and his hand was frozen but he dropped it. Garraka's thoughts reached Melody as she walked down a street. She claimed she was going as fast as she could then asked if it had to be Phoebe. Garraka spoke. Melody stated she understood. The lights around her came back on. The next day, Lars demonstrated the orb's Zero Kelvin temperature then used a grabber claw and placed the orb against the Puft Terrarium. Everyone observed the Mini-Pufts jumping violently into the glass. Podcast recorded it on his phone. He later noticed audio in a dead language that he never heard at the Center. At the New York City Public Library, Dr. Hubert Wartzki heard the audio and saw a photo of the orb. He knew what it was and told Ray, Phoebe Spengler, and Podcast about the story of Garraka and the Fire Masters as recorded in stone carvings documented in Explorations To The Indus Valley. Possessor attempted to steal a wax cylinder recording of the chant to free Garraka but failed.
One night later, Melody successfully tricked Phoebe into going to the Paranormal Research Center and using the Ionic Separator to ghost-walk. The Separator temporarily split her spirit from her body for two minutes. Melody apologized to Phoebe. Garraka suddenly took control of both Phoebe's spirit and body and made her recite the chant to free him from the orb. Melody explained Garraka could control only ghosts and not humans. Phoebe's ghost-walking was a loophole that Garraka exploited to gain his freedom. Melody claimed Garraka was her only chance to see her family again because she believed he could open the door to the Other Side. The orb rose up from the desk and completely disassembled into pieces. A black smokey mass was left and spread across the room. Phoebe was freed. She and Melody looked up at a pair of eyes and heard Garraka say, "Your world will shatter. Bones and ice. My empire will rise." Melody vanished from the room and Phoebe was back in her body. Garraka manifested his corporeal form. Lucky Domingo slid a Trap toward him and opened fire with an upgraded Proton Pack but the stream had no effect on Garraka. He froze the stream and it fell to pieces on the floor. The pack froze and turned off. Lucky began to freeze as Garraka left the building.
The next day, Garraka entered the Firemaster Smoke N Vape thinking a Fire Master was inside. The clerk on duty had his back turned to the entrance and was finishing stocking a shelf when the bell rung. He asked for a minute. Garraka asked him if he was the Fire Master. Unaware of what Garraka was, the clerk sarcastically replied he was and told him to read the "damn sign." The clerk turned around and Garraka froze him. An icicle shot out from the shelf and shattered his body to pieces. Garraka froze the front door until it collapsed. He entered Nadeem's Apartment in his black smoke-like ethereal form. He manifested his physical form, scratched a framed photo of Dadi and Nadeem, and went into the hidden brass room. He reattached his horns and his full power was restored. The room froze. Phoebe thought of using brass. Ray keyed on it as the Orb used to imprison Garraka was brass and noted brass that was psychically charged would be especially useful. Phoebe took out the Proton Pack she hid under her bed and hack sawed a piece of a fire pole from the third floor. She used a blow torch and melted the brass down then brass plated components of her pack.
Garraka made his way to the Firehouse. He sealed up the doorway in ice. The Containment Unit was punctured open by the Death Chill. Phoebe told Melody the truth was she had to move on herself and Garraka was not the solution she had been searching for. Peter Venkman noted they tried doing it the nice way but that didn't work. Everyone opened fire but the Proton Streams still had no effect on Garraka just as Lucky claimed. He froze the streams. Nadeem awkwardly came down a fire pole in his Dadi's Fire Master armor. He offered Garraka a chance for the both of them to call it even and go their separate ways. Garraka stated he was no Fire Master. Nadeem noted he gave him a chance but was unable to spark his lighter. Trevor Spengler realized he used up all the fluid practicing. No one had a spare lighter or matches. Garraka plucked the lighter away, froze it, and blew the pieces away then proceeded to freeze everyone and summon the his ghost army from the Containment Unit. A column of energy shot out of the Containment Unit and Firehouse just like in 1984. Ghosts flew out of the floor into the city. Phoebe regained consciousness and headed upstairs. She fired a trifurcated Proton Stream and it had a noticeable effect on Garraka. The column of energy receded back into the Containment Unit. However, Garraka was still able to counter and froze Phoebe and her pack. Garraka proceeded to pull Phoebe's spirit out of her body but Melody lit her match. Nadeem took control of the flame and blasted Garraka. The fire spread and thawed everyone out.
Phoebe resumed blasting Garraka. Callie, Gary, and Trevor helped stabilize Phoebe from the power of the stream. Podcast tried using Drone Trap but Garraka struck it out of the air. Peter remarked they were going to need a bigger Trap. Ray Stantz realized they had one: the Containment Unit. Peter implored him to pretend he didn't know what he was talking out. Ray, Peter, Winston Zeddemore, and Janine Melnitz ran down to the basement. Ray tried to quickly explain that if he could neutralize the mass energy density to reduce criticality, it would then force the unit to re-prime itself and reverse the polarity but Peter cut him off and yelled to just do it. Ray pushed the three buttons in reverse order but struggled to pull the handle down. Everyone helped. Icicles shot out towards them. Ray and Winston both recalled "Golden years" from a prior conversation. The Containment Unit pulled Garraka in. The pull ripped his horns off. After he entered the Containment Unit, the tear sealed up and clipped some of his claws off. The light above the unit turned green. Melody was able to move on and dispersed. All of the effects of the Death Chill dissipated. Mayor Walter Peck was intent on blaming the Ghostbusters for the city-wide damage and shut them down but crowd pressure forced him to reverse his stance.
Tertiary Canon History[]
Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord[]
During a June blizzard, Ray summoned the San Francisco Ghostbusters to the Firehouse and asked them for their help in dealing with Garraka. He equipped them Heat Beam attachments. Ray told them the story about how Gustav Hookfaber came to them in the 1980s with the brass chocolate box claiming it briefly contained the spirit of his dead sister and at the time thought he was scamming them for funding. He believed Hookfaber's research might help them extract and contain Garraka. Ray instructed the team to head back to San Francisco and search Alcatraz Island for Hookfaber's secret office and locate his diary. They went to Hookfaber Factory in search of three objects Hookfaber trapped ghosts in. After they placed them on Frequency Generators, they were surprised to see Ghost Lord manifest and defeated him again. While the team worked in San Francisco, Garraka escaped the orb. Ray and Gabriela Sparks speculated the Ghost Lord Hookfaber served was really Garraka. The team headed to Chinatown to restore a Harvester in order to collect ectoplasm from icy ghosts.
The team returned to New York to deliver the canisters just as Garraka emptied the Containment Unit of the captured ghosts in it. On the roof, they encountered Garraka who stole the canisters. Over the radio, Ray warned the Proton Streams were useless. Gabriela Sparks noticed they were. Ray realized the Heat Beam's nozzles were made of brass and implored them to fire away. As they attacked with Heat Beams, Garraka dropped the canisters. As vents overheated, they placed the canisters on them. Ray reported the canisters flooded the Containment Unit and acted like coolant. They reversed the entropy on it and used the Containment Unit to trap Garraka. The team wrangled Garraka and moved him towards the hole in the roof and he was trapped. Gabriela declared they earned themselves a break.
Description[]
In his corporeal form, Garraka is a tall, emaciated demonic entity. Garraka's eyes alternate between black and glowing blue. In his original form, he had two long ram-like horns on both sides of his head but they were forcibly removed. In 2024, Garraka located and connected them back into his head. There is a small horn located on each shoulder. He has long, thin black claws. He is also abnormally tall, around 10 to 13 feet. He has pale grey skin and wears a ragged black cloth around his waist that drapes down his lower body.
In his ethereal form, Garraka appears as a dense, billowing black smoke with the capacity to black out an entire room.
Powers[]
Garraka can cultivate human fear into the Death Chill, an extreme thermodynamic attack that freezes its victims to death. He also displays thought transference that can compel ghosts to fight for him, even if the ghost does not wish to.[2] He can switch between an ethereal form that resembles a black smokey mass and his corporeal form.
Garraka is resistant to standard Proton Streams and Traps. Lars Pinfield speculated this was because he was an ancient god from another dimension, he had a different atomic composition than all other entities.

Entry Bio[]
"Spine-chilling" is a blistering understatement when describing the cold malevolence that exudes from Garraka, a formidable icy overlord. One look into his cold, soulless eyes will make you wish you never crossed paths, and that's not even taking into account the baleful ice he can summon with his tremendous psychokinetic energy. Not even the nuclear space heaters strapped to the Ghostbusters' backs can keep them warm for long.
Ghost Type[]
Garakka is a type of Overlord. Overlords are an unrelenting spectral force. Unlike other specters who prefer to hide, the Overlord SEEKS. Born of pain, the fear, and darkness, the Overlord is as mighty as they are clever. They're imbued with never-before-documented passive abilities that make them even more difficult to tether. The Overlord's aura emits a Looming Dread, compounding a creeping sense of fear within anyone in range. Alas, don't expect Overlords to "slime" or "shock" those in their way, rather, they devastate them by swinging their deadly claws and hurling any physical objects they can sink their P.K.E. into. Wrangling with an Overlord is quite a horrifying challenge, any way you set it. The kind of ghastly, ghostly encounter that makes me thank my stars I'm a flippin' book.

- + Rift Summoning Ultimate Ability
- + Easier Trap Escape Minigame

Ultimate Ability[]
- Eternal Night
- The Overlord has only one pursuit and it's to bring an unending darkness to the realm of the living. What better to serve this purpose than Eternal Night! This ultimate ability shrouds all in its midst within a thick, dark fog, creating a location-wide blackout. It is but a meager taste of the fate awaiting the Ghostbusters and their kind. Along with greatly increased fear gain, the Overlord manifests a Rift Catalyst from the void. This growing ball of P.K.E. hovers above the ground, increasing in strength before creatures in the vicinity, and, to add to the terror, leaves behind a new, exposed Ghost Rift that the Overlord can use to continue its rampage! Beware annoying Busters who can seek out and destroy the catalyst, prematurely ending the Eternal Night. For now...
Unique Ability[]
- Ice Spear
- Sometimes Garraka likes to take a more "direct" approach when it comes to encapsulating his victims in bone-chilling frost. With a wave of his daggered hands, he summons a spear of ice he can throw to strike the Busters and pin them where they stand. While they are trapped, frost will whittle them down until they're powerless, that is unless they manage to break the mound of ice keeping them in place.

Maybe you would see the suggestion of eyes. Maybe where was some shoulder. Something in there but it's going to be just all vapor but it evolved into this thing where he was torso and a lot of vapor and then as he realized in this world he would get more and more formed, it was--effects is always a challenge. They don't work. They take more time than you expect them to. There's challenges you didn't expect. And I think with Garraka, it was no different. How thick was the vapor? How much movement would it have? And landing on the final result turned out nice the way the vapor had an otherwordly feel and cold and the parts of adding the icy quality to him and his Death Chill breath."
