'''Continues in [[Ghostbusters:_Afterlife#Online Coverage|Online Coverage section]]'''
On December 6, 2019, a first look article was published by Vanity Fair. Carrie Coon portrays Callie, Mckenna Grace portrays her "science-obsessed" daughter Phoebe, and Finn Wolfhard is "gearhead" son Trevor. They left everything they knew and moved to a small town in Oklahoma after inheriting property from the father Callie never knew. The family deals with the issues of regrets about the past, guilt over lost moments, and unfinished busness. Afterlife "is a new adventure that connects back to the Manhattan Crossrip of 1984." Rick Moranis is expected to not reprise his role. The family arrives at the farm and begins "to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters" and "Trevor and Phoebe are about to find out who their grandfather was and whether they're ready to pick up the proton pack themselves." First still is of Trevor discovering Ecto-1 in a collapsing barn. In the house, Phoebe discovers a mountain of books and the P.K.E. Meter. The second still is of Ecto-1 being driven in a field. Phoebe becomes transfixed by the mystery of their new town, including strange rumblings from a nearby mine. In the third still, Phoebe "and her schoolmate (played by Logan Kim) ignore warning signs to venture closer to the abandoned and dangerous place." "Trevor and Phoebe may actually know less about the Ghostbusters than anyone. What happened in 1984 is as mysterious to them as Van Halen and Run-DMC is to Billie Eilish." Paul Rudd portrays their summer school teacher Mr. Grooberson and "who was a kid when the Manhattan Crossrip occurred. Although later generations may think of it as a myth, or not think of it at all, he remembers it obsessively and is excited to pass on what he knows." The fourth still is of Grooberson holding a Trap and is stunned as "it's been a while since he's seen anything like this, and never this close."<ref>[https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/12/ghostbusters-afterlife-first-look Vanity Fair "First Look at Ghostbusters: Afterlife" 12/6/19]</ref>

On January 16, 2020, in an interview, Finn Wolfhard confirmed the first trailer held back from revealing the "big stuff," the movie is about loss, there was a lot of practical effects used rather than CGI, there were two Ecto-1s, neither was the original, he was not allowed to touch the gas pedal, and a Corvette engine was swapped in to handle the chase sequences.<ref>[https://soundcloud.com/smodcast/426-the-stranger-thing-about-finn SModcast Episode 426 "The Stranger Thing About Finn" 37:00-46:29 1/16/2020] ''Finn Wolfhard says: "The minute I got on set they're like "you are not allowed to move your foot on the pedal, let alone do not touch it. You can act, do not drive it"...they had two of those, two Ectos...they had shells, they built from the ground up...we couldn't just like have the original engine in it or it'd explode essentially so ah they figured out how to put a Corvette engine into a Ecto...What's amazing about Jason is, and Jason said it in interviews too, there's a lot of practical effects and a lot of practical effects and a lot of the effects that you think would be CGI are not, which I was very--I was so happy to be part of...It's a very surface level. I mean...There's footage, but you have not seen the big stuff yet...Big things, a lot of it is about loss."''</ref>

On January 23, 2020, an article about a set visit to a soundstage in Canada last September just days before Bill Murray's birthday was posted. Murray noted, "The script is good. It's got lots of emotion in it. It's got lots of family in it, with through lines that are really interesting." The article featured Bill Murray letting the journalist wear a Proton Pack prop to see how heavy it is. It was the 30-pound heavy-duty version used for close-ups. It is loaded with batteries and rumble motors to make the blasters shudder and jolt in the hands of the user. Ben Eadie was the prop master on set. Murray confirmed the narrative deals with the absence of Egon Spengler. The new story advances the message that anyone can be a Ghostbuster. Reitman notes he's making this movie for his father. It's the idea of what it would be like to find a Proton Pack in your grandparents' basement and what would that discovery reveals about who you are and what adventures you're about to go on. Callie is described as a a "tough mom."<ref>[https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/01/hanging-with-bill-murray-on-the-set-of-ghostbusters-afterlife Vanity Fair/Hollywood 2020 "Exclusive: Hanging With Bill Murray on the Set of Ghostbusters: Afterlife" 1/23/2020]</ref>

On September 16, 2020, Callie Coon revealed her husband Tracy Letts was also cast because he happened to be in Canada with her and their son Haskell when the production lost an actor to due to a conflict. She also implies her character uses a Proton Pack.<ref>[https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/carrie-coon-on-the-nest-unanswered-the-leftovers-questions-and-surreal-ghostbusters-casting The Hollywood Reporter "Carrie Coon on 'The Nest,' Unanswered 'The Leftovers' Questions and Surreal 'Ghostbusters' Casting" 9/16/2020] ''Carrie Coon says: "The reason he's in Ghostbusters is because he happened to be in Canada with me and Haskell when they lost an actor due to a conflict, and so they just asked if he was around. (Laughs.) So it worked out really well...And, I confess, it’s much harder to mime the kinetic force of accelerating particles than it is to act with a functional hose, so I’m not sure it would’ve helped my case. Suffice it to say, I have a new appreciation for the original Ghostbusters’ technique."''</ref>

We seldom think of post production. Yet post is the final rewrite and goes inarguably longer than filming. The team behind Afterlife has been working on GBA since the summer of 2019. Like many other families, the GBA family has stuck together through unimaginable circumstances. We have sweated every cut, every proton beam, every neutrona boom, and every note of music. We’ve been thinking about the same two hours for 18 months. Post requires resilience. It demands the ability to continue caring, even when it feels like pencils should be down. This family cares so much. The movie you will eventually see is the result of editors and visual effects artists and sound designers and musicians and colorists and mixers who gave their heart to Ghostbusters."''</ref> Curt Sobel also posted a photo, citing Perry Robertson, Rob Simonsen. On January 21, 2021, EMPIRE's March issue released. On page 83, Jason Reitman compared filming scenes with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson to filming a documentary and it was his job to be there when Peter Venkman started talking. One day on the set, Ivan Reitman visited and dipped his finger in a tub of slime then nodded in approval of its consistency. A virtually finished version of the movie was screened on the Sony lot at the start of December 2020.<ref>De Semlyen, Nick (January 21, 2021). It's just my job to be there when he starts talking." And he studied the original movie's exquisite blend of comedy and horror, making sure to focus as much on the latter as the former."''</ref><ref>De Semlyen, Nick (January 21, 2021). Another was more recent, at the start of December, when the virtually finished film was finally screened. "My father hasn't been leaving the house much because of Covid," Reitman says, "But he took a test, put on a mask and drove down to the Sony lot to watch the movie with the studio. ===Online Coverage===

I've had this idea for years.' I thought 'What the heck? How can that possibly be?' I mean, I remember the kid when he was a kid. I remember his bar mitzvah, you know, I remember like what the heck does this kid know but he had a--he has a really, really wonderful idea that he wrote with another wonderful guy that I got to work with, Bill Cannon, who made the City of Ember and the two of them wrote a Ghostbusters movie that's...that really brings it back to life, it really has the feel of the first one more than the second one or the girls one. It has a different feel than the two out of the four. It--and I think he's--he's really got something, I mean if you've seen the trailer for it, you go ' That reminds me of the first one'--have you seen it, Roger? It's like that--it's--it has that feeling and it was hard. It was really hard, that's why I think it's going to be good because it was really hard. It was really painful and then we were just in for a little while but it was physically painful. I mean, we did it a long time ago but wearing those packs is extremely uncomfortable even though they've made the packs, I mean we had batteries the size of batteries, you know. They know have like batteries the size of, you know, earrings but it's still a heavy thing to wear all the time and the special effects of this one are lot's of wind and dirt in your face and a lot of getting up and down off the ground. A lot of go down and get back up. It's like this, 'What is this? What am I doing like, these are like Bulgarian dead lifts, not Bulgarian dead lifts, but some sort of like Russian kettle bells getting up and down with the damn things on your back. Very, very painful and uncomfortable so I feel usually when something has a high very high misery quotient, then usually something comes to that. Something is produced, some quality--some is--produced that if you can project it--capture it, and project it, it comes on the screen and affects you."''</ref>

On February 24, 2021, it was revealed the Menahan Street Band recorded a new version of the "Ghostbusters" song in early 2020 in New York before the covid-19 pandemic struck. Development

On April 28, 2016, it was reported in the EMPIRE June 2016 issue, Ivan Reitman commented there was another yet-to-be announced live-action film which is "coming along really well."[20]

On July 14, 2016, Ivan Reitman confirmed the movie is in the middle of being written and will probably have both men and women on the team.[21]

On July 20, 2017, during the Ghostbusters 101 panel, Ivan Reitman reaffirmed there is a new live action film also in the works.[22]

On November 13, 2018, during an interview on The Big Interview with Dan Rather, Dan Aykroyd mentioned a new movie was currently being written that would reunite himself, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson and it involved Murray portraying a ghost. He hinted a filmmaker duo is writing the draft and the goal is to take the emotion and spirit of the first two movies and modernize it for the 21st century audiences. He estimated it could happen in the next few years.[23][24][25][26]

On January 15, 2019, it was reported that Jason Reitman will direct, co-write, and co-produce a new movie that takes place in the original movie continuity but set in present day. Reitman co-wrote the screenplay with Gil Kenan. Ivan Reitman will be a producer. Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan pitched the story to Ivan Reitman. Sony Pictures set the movie to release Summer 2020 and plans to start principal photography in a few months.[27] The movie went by the codename "Rust City."[28] Ivan Reitman's Montecito Pictures is producing. Filming is reported to start summer 2019 and Reitman is already testing four teenage actors for four roles.[29] It was added the four leads would be two boys and two girls.[30]

On January 16, 2019, the Teaser Trailer was released through Entertainment Weekly. [31] A casting call for two roles was posted under "RUST CITY (Actor Access Release of 2 Roles)" with John Papsidera listed as the casting director but no start date was listed.[32]

On January 17, 2019, it was reported two of the new leads would be a 13 year old boy and a 12 year old girl. The boy is "passionate about fantasy and conspiracy theories," approaches every situation with "unbridled excitement for the unknown" and will "narrate life in real time, adding "descriptive color" to the people he meets." The girl is an "insanely smart kid," has a hard time with "interpreting and expressing emotions and speaks with a flat delivery that make her observations humorous", wants to connect with others, struggles with interpreting how her family and friends feel, has difficulty sharing her own feelings, and her science acumen is said to prove invaluable. The plot centers on a family who moves back home to a small town where they begin to learn more about who they are and the secrets of the town itself.[33]

On January 25, 2019, Exhibitor Relations and Variety reported Sony set a release date of July 10, 2020.[34][35]

On January 26, 2019, Jason Reitman confirmed the release date for the film is July 10, 2020.[36] Audition videos for 12 year old actress Sarah Abbott and a transcript surfaced.[37]

On February 2, 2019, Francois Audouy, a production designer, posted a photo of Ecto-1 and revealed he was working on something related to the Ghostbusters 2020 movie on Monday.[38] Audouy's bio on instagram indicated the movie was his next project.

On February 14, 2019, two more character breakdowns were reported, an "UNNAMED (LEAD BOY 2) To play 12 years old. Slender, pale, dark hair, piercing blue eyes, aquiline features, high cheekbones, withdrawn. He's prodigious - bright, witty, stubborn, and remains playful in spite of hardship. He is also a brilliantly quick thinker under pressure, is at ease with technology, and has a high facility for problem-solving" and "UNNAMED (LEAD GIRL 2): To play 13 years old. Fun-loving, a bit of an airhead. Always curious, haunted, charmed, dazed."[39]

On February 18, 2019, Jason Reitman revealed he wrote the script in secret with Gil Kenan over 2018 while they finished production of "The Front Runner" then turned it in in December 2018. Reitman was prepared to take time off from filmmaking in 2019 to do rewrites of it. However, Sony approved the first draft and greenlit the movie. He emphasized he wants to make a movie "for his fellow Ghostbusters fans" and is "a 100% love letter" to them.[40][41]

On February 22, 2019, it was reported Jason Reitman would be meeting with young actors this weekend to play the four teen protagonists and was looking for two pairs of a brother-sister combo in the 12 and 17-year range.[42]

On March 1, 2019, it was reported Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon are in talks to star in the movie and the story will focus on a single mom and her family, with Coon playing the mom and Wolfhard playing her son.[43] Jason Reitman quoted a tweet about the report and the added detail the family has mysterious ties to the 1984 movie.[44]

I--we--so I wrote the film in secret with my writing partner Gil Kenan. We wrote it over the last year while we were finishing up "(The) Front Runner". And we turned it in in December. And I have to admit my presumption was it was going to be any other studio film I heard about where there's years of rewrites and they grind it into the ground and it never happens. I was kind of fully prepared for this year to be a little taking time off and doing rewrites on Ghostbusters and instead the studio read the first draft and said 'Yeah, go make it'."

Uh, and we reached out to--we reached out to all the originals, the cast, the crew--the people who made his movie and we formed this small group that gets together, uh, an advisory board of people who worked on the original film to make sure we make the right film...But what I will say is it's a new movie. We went back and found the original physical vinyl letters they used to make the Ghostbusters poster in 1984, rescanned them, then, uh, our titles guys reprinted them and we filmed the titles, not like in a computer, we shot physical titles with light and smoke effect because that's how they would have done it back in the say so we are in every way trying to go back to the original technique and make a -- hand the movie back to the fans."

  222. Ghostbusters News "Ghostbusters: Afterlife appears to have finished post-production as director and crew celebrate" 11/21/2020 Jason Reitman says: "When we think of making movies, we imagine movie sets – Camera operators and electricians and grips. The movie you will eventually see is the result of editors and visual effects artists and sound designers and musicians and colorists and mixers who gave their heart to Ghostbusters."

And we went back and got all the details right. I mean, we were literally going frame by frame through the original '84 film and looking for all kinds of details. We got the original car out and we scanned the license plate so we could replicate it perfectly. You'll notice there's a few differences. Uh, the ladder. A lot of people saw this really early. The ladder was moved to the other side but that had a reason because we added the gunner seat. The door flips open, the seat – well, you're gonna see. It's really cool. There's a lot of cool things, lots of surprises you still don't know about this car. Um, and it was so much fun to shoot because we put this crazy new engine in it and we have it doing things you'd never believe Ecto-1 could do."

Deadline "Bill Murray Accepts Maltin Modern Master Award At Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Reflecting On His Time With 'Ghostbusters,' His Writing Ambitions & More" 4/3/2021 Bill Murray says: "And it's--I remember him calling me and saying 'I've got an idea for another Ghostbusters. Something is produced, some quality--some is--produced that if you can project it--capture it, and project it, it comes on the screen and affects you."
