Gameplay[]
Single user or up to four player co-op multiplayer. Three supported player modes can be used: sitting, standing, or roomscale. For sitting, a minimum play area of 3 feet by 3 feet and a rotating desk chair are recommended. A minimum play area of 3 feet by 3 feet to take steps are also recommended for standing. For roomscale, a play area of 6.5 feet by 6.5 feet is recommended for a Rift S. On a Rift, apps and games require three Oculus sensors and a play area of at least 6.5 feet by 5 feet is recommended. Genre is "Action, Adventure." Supporting languages are English, Chinese (China), Chinese (Hong Kong), Chinese (Taiwan), French (France), German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish (Argentina), Spanish (Chile), Spanish (Colombia), Spanish (Mexico), Spanish (Peru), Spanish (Spain), and Spanish (Venezuela). Supported controllers are the Touch Controllers and supported platforms are Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro. It is rated Teen for Violence and Crude Humor.

The Full Containment Edition includes the game and six months of upcoming DLC and bonus content that includes 4 Equipment Skins, 10 additional playable avatars, a Slimer Hunt feature and collectible, and more.
The Meta Quest 3 version will have a Mini-Puft Mayhem mini-game.
Missions[]
The player starts the game at Hookfaber Mansion then the next level is the official job as a Ghostbuster: dealing with an Infestation at the Hookfaber Factory. After finishing both missions, the player can choose from five locations, each having their own version of four general missions. The four general missions that players can try for the five locations (Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, Sewers, Chinatown, and Factory) each have their own unique prompt. There are also harder versions of these missions that display as "Extreme." Once enough of the game is played, a new mission will be selectable: Ghost Lord Battle. Players return to Hookfaber Mansion in search of a Summoning Staff but are drawn into a final showdown with Ghost Lord called Golden Gate Bridge – Bridge Finale. The game progress screen at the desk in Headquarters tracks the total possible missions the player completes for a total of 42. As of November 16, 2023, the Heist & Seek mission was added which increased the total to 52. As of December 15, 2023, the Infestation mission was added which increased the total to 62. As of January 31, 2024, the Slimer Hunt mission was added which increased the total to 63. As of March 28, 2024, the five Frozen Empire missions were not added to the total count which remains at 63.
Intro Missions[]
Gustav Hookfaber's Mansion
Description on loading screen: Retrieve the missing scientific equipment from the Mansion.
Objectives: You've answered an ad from conspiracist podcaster 'Big T' to run a courier job on behalf of Gabriela, head of California Ghostbusters. Enter the mansion of Gustav Hookfaber and retrieve the three pieces of Ghostbusters' equipment; the PKE Meter, Muon Trap and Proton Pack. Then get out before Hookfaber returns!
Infestation
Description on loading screen: Gustav's factory suddenly has a high PKE read since the mansion incident. Go and check it out.
Objectives: You got your first call! The city map detected a spike in PKE energy at Gustav Hookfaber's factory. Big T has remotely disabled security, now you should use your PKE meter to locate the source and deal with it using your recently retrieved equipment.
Types of Missions[]
Exorcism
Description on loading screen: A super surge has opened a fissure to the ethereal plane! Locate and retrieve Special Objects to close the portal.
Objectives: A portal has opened up to the ethereal plane and your team need to figure out how to close it. Around the portal, there will be three frequency generators and each contains slime that has been drawn up through the opening. Scan the slime with your P.K.E. Meters to help lock onto a matching signal and navigate through the location to find an object with the same frequency. Bring the three objects back to their matching generators, and use them. The generator sends out an earth-shaking pulse into the void, forcing out the Bruiser; a ferocious mini boss with four terrifying attacking limbs. As a team you will need to work together to tether and remove its limbs, before it can be trapped. Trapping the Brusier closes portal.
A portal has opened up at this location and the only way to remove it is to eliminate the Bruiser that caused it. To summon the Bruiser you need to find three special objects and bring them back to the frequency generators around the portal. Scanning the green slime on the frequency generators can help. Discharge the frequency generators to fire a pulse into the portal and summon the Bruiser.
On-The-Clock
Description on loading screen: We're not paid by the hour! Catch or vaporize as many ghosts as possible before time runs out.
Objectives: Players have ten minutes to attempt to suppress three separate ghost emergences. It's a high-energy, fast paced mode that puts your combat skills to the test against waves of fearsome ghosts. Once the first emergence is located and resolved, navigate to the second and then the third, each one increasing in intensity.
Harvester
Description on loading screen: One of Gustav's infernal machines stirs! Restore it to collect and fill containers with ectoplasm.
Objectives: Across the city are gigantic ghost catching machines that have broken and spewed their contents into the locality. With your team locate and repair the machine; whether that's cooling heat sinks, recalibrating dials or finding replacement fuses. Your P.K.E. Meter can help locate particularly well hidden parts. Once the machine is up and running you'll need to pull as many ghosts into it as possible, filling up two large canisters with dark P.K. energy Return them to the Ecto-1 for a nice paycheck.
Gustave Hookfaber had secretly installed his HARVESTER machines across the city. Locate and repair the one in this location and bring 2 CANISTERS back to the HQ for analysis. Hint: scanning green slime on the HARVESTER can help locate spare parts in the location.
Giga Trap Retrieval
Description on loading screen: We left GIGA TRAPS around the city and this one is ready to collect! Locate and retrieve it for research.
Objectives: The Ghostbusters have left large ambient ghost traps across the city tuned to the Ghost Lord's frequency and in this location is a Giga Trap that’s caught something. Go into the site and locate the trap, then work as a team to extract it. It won't be easy; the traces of the Ghost Lord's spirit inside the Giga Trap will have strange effects on the world and the carrier, levitating barriers to create new paths and causing nightmarish hallucinations. By all means let go of the Trap momentarily, but leave it for too long and the contents will violently erupt and be lost. Get to the end though, and the Ghostbusters will know a little more about the Ghost Lord.
We have developed a passive trap that can draw PKE out of the air matching certain frequencies. There's a trap in this location set to the Ghost Lord's frequency. Bring it back to HQ so we can analyze what it's caught. Hint: work together in a team.
Ghost Lord Battle
Description on loading screen: We think Gustav had a prototype summoning STAFF and if so, we might be able to use it against him. Head into the Mansion basement and retrieve the STAFF. After that..? We'll figure something out.
Objectives: Back at Hookfaber's mansion. If the intel from Big T and Gabriela is correct, Gustav made a prototype SUMMONING STAFF which may be exactly what you need to defeat the GHOST LORD once and for all. Head down into the basement, retrieve the STAFF and get it back to ECTO-1.

Starting on November 16, 2023, more missions were added to the game starting with Heist & Seek. On December 15, 2023, Infestation was officially added. On January 31, 2024, Slimer Hunt was officially added. On March 28, 2024, five Frozen Empire missions were officially added.
Heist & Seek
Description on loading screen: POLTER-HEISTS are robbing the joint! Catch them before they steal all the gold.
Infestation
Description on loading screen: This place is slime central! Locate and capture the NEST to stop the outbreak.
Objective: There's a disgusting NEST MONSTER that's stinking out of corner somewhere in this location. Find it and destroy by removing its eyes. Hint: you'll need to shock it into opening its eyes so you can tether one. Try seeing how it reacts when you trap another ghost.
Slimer Hunt
Description: One of the ghosts from New York has materialized in the Hookfaber mansion. Track down, trap and send it back before Hookfaber captures him!
Objective: The mansion is being haunted by a hungry Specter. Use your PKE meter to search the area and locate the ghost.

Frozen Empire is comprised of five missions.

Icy Ectoplasm
Description: Find and restore Hookfaber's ghost harvesting machine. Use it to collect ectoplasm from icy ghosts that can be sent to Ray for analysis.

Description: Deliver the ectoplasm to Ray to help the New York Ghostbusters defeat Garraka!

In the Ghostbusters Headquarters, players can track their progress in the game by looking at the computer monitor at the desk near Ecto-1. It will display how many jobs were completed versus total jobs, how many equipment upgrades were added, how many ghosts were discovered, and how many costumes were unlocked. On April 20, 2022, the Ghostbusters VR game was announced during the Meta Quest Gaming Show and a teaser was released. Up to four players can play together in co-op multiplayer but it can also be played by a single user. Ghostbusters VR is just a working title.[1][2][3] nDreams commented the availability of the game on other platforms will be addressed at a later date.[4]
On April 22, 2022, nDreams' David Corless revealed the team met with Sony and Ghost Corps about the game in January 2020.[5]
On April 26, 2022, an interview with Senior VP of Virtual Reality for Sony Pictures Entertainment, Jake Zim was posted. Zim confirmed the game's story is not about Ghostbusters: Afterlife nor is it a sequel to it. It is a new story and a new concept that ties closely back into elements that fans love about Ghostbuters. In terms of timeline, the story is set in modern day and maybe slightly into the future.[6]
On June 8, 2022, Jake Zim announced the game will also be on Playstation VR2.[7]
On October 28, 2022, it was revealed Greg Miller will be interviewing the creative team on Halloween where a new title and key art will be presented.[8]
On October 31, 2022, during Kinda Gunny Games' livestream, the new title was revealed to be "Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord" and teased the story entails a San Francisco team having to solve a deep mystery and stopping "the powerful Ghost Lord and his band of malevolent ghosts from causing chaos." The team's Firehouse and Containment Unit are a cable car station and retrofitted cable car. Their Ecto-1 will be different looking than the classic one. Players will also use a P.K.E. Meter and shoot out a Trap with a retractable device. Sony Pictures VR's Riley Cooper mentioned Jason Reitman was able to play a recent build of the game and gave some direction that the equipment should be "a little bit makeshift, a little bit improvised." A modern version of the Neutrona Wand was imagined, including a side handle. Customization are in terms picking the suit for one of four selectable characters. There will be tethering and overheating. Key art of the team and Ghost Lord were shown along with Mini-Pufts. Missions will have variety. One type of mission is "Exorcism Mode." Another emphasizes the player walking around with the P.K.E. Meter. Another involves retrieving something then the ghosts show up. It will still be four-player co-op, balancing between "investigation and combat."[9]
On December 8, 2022, the official Ghostbusters Twitter account teased the game would be featured during The Game Awards later in the day.[10] A 1:02 trailer featuring pre-alpha gameplay, a remix of Ghostbusters (song), and a narration by Ernie Hudson was released.[11]
On January 24, 2023, it was reported Oculus set a June 1, 2023 release date for the game.[12]
On June 1, 2023, a Meta Quest 3 sizzle reel included a brief shot of the headquarters and Ectomobile at the 56 second mark.[13] A 1:33 story trailer was released narrated by Gustav Hookfaber, a former understudy of Egon, Ray, and Peter at Columbia University.[14] A roundtable with ndreams Art Director Jack Bromhead was posted. He confirmed gameplay is all about teamwork, there is an array of equipment, all equipment can be upgraded, there is an upgrade station in the headquarters, upgrades include a deployable shield and a decoy, players can select from an array of missions and earn cash at the end of every mission to buy equipment, they tied in a lot of the existing Ghostbusters universe into the story, confirmed a mission takes place at Alcatraz, confirmed Mini-Pufts are in it and will swarm you, and they looked at Tobin's Spirit Guide and existing IP when developing the ghosts in the game.[15]
On September 14, 2023, a 1 minute gameplay trailer was released. The release date was announced to be October 26, 2023. There will be a "Full Containment Edition" offered. It contains the game with six months of upcoming DLC and bonus content at a discounted price.[16] Eye tracking is implemented as an option for menu navigation, as well as making it intuitive to grab objects from a distance. In cooperative gaming, it can be used for communication. Immersive lighting will darken a room. The PS VR2's graphical capabilities aided the team on delivering on emotional tone, such as feeling a sense of dread and unease going into a dimly lit dark basement until you unleash your particle thrower and it suddenly fills the room with light. The PlayStation 5's power also enabled a number of ethereal ghost effects that evoke the movies. The degrees of haptics used ranges from subtly cuing players when there's something afoot, to more shocking effects from ghosts.[17] A 5 minute roundtable conducted on the set of the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. There are franchises in various states but there has been no activity for a while until a blip on radar in San Francisco. The team that checks it out accidentally releases Ghost Lord who plans to raise the first undead city. Chinatown, Alcatraz, and Golden Gate Bridge are confirmed as levels. At headquarters, players can change up outfits at the locker. There is a shooting gallery to test out equipment. Missions have job types like combat, investigation or exploration but you have to pick one. Once Mini Pufts are on you, you can't use equipment until you pop them. Puffer is a ghost that gets angry and explodes. Penny is the clown-faced ghost and is a "healer." If a ghost flies through you, you feel a rumble from the headset.[18]
On September 27, 2023, the game was featured briefly in a Meta Quest 3 promo. That version will have a Mini-Puft Mayhem mini-game.[19][20]
On October 13, 2023, it was revealed a Gold Rush Proton Pack is included in the Full Containment Edition. More reveals are forthcoming.[21]
On October 17, 2023, a short clip previewing the Gold Rush Proton Pack's thrower was posted.[22] A price breakdown was also posted.[23]
On October 24, 2023, Alice Aces, one of the character skins included in the Full Containment Edition, was featured.[24]
On October 27, 2023, a launch trailer was posted.[25] An interview with Sony Pictures Entertainment Senior Vice President of Virtual Reality Jake Zim was posted. Development of Rise of the Ghost Lord started in 2020.[26]
On October 30, 2023, Aria Saltini confirmed she voiced Katie Miller, Companion, and additional ghosts and voices.[27]
On October 31, 2023, Patch 1.1 was released.[28]
On November 2, 2023, it was revealed the first free DLC will release before the end of the year. It will include two new game modes called Heist & Seek and Infestation. In Heist & Seek, players will pursue the ghosts of three bank-robbing brothers one-by-one by searching for piles of gold but if a Ghostbuster goes down, the money they collected in the mission can be stolen by the reviving player on their team. Infestation is the same as the second mission in which players seek out the Nest Monster and have to tether and pull out its eyes to defeat it.[29]
On November 5, 2023, a Meta Quest TV spot featuring the game began airing.[30]
On November 11, 2023, Siho Ellsmore revealed she voiced several characters, including the Newscaster and Pinny.[31]
On November 15, 2023, it was announced the Heist & Seek mode will be added to the game on November 16.[32] The Buster Bundle #1 bundle will also release that day. It includes a Keymaster skin and a Gator Proton Pack and thrower.[33]
On November 16, 2023, Patch 2.0 was also released.[34]
On November 22, 2023, it was reported Las Vegas' Sphere arena played a Meta Quest 3 advertisement promoting Rise of the Ghost Lord with a Mini-Puft.[35] An official video was later posted.[36]
On December 5, 2023, a Meta Quest 3 promo featured the game.[37]
On December 13, 2023, a developer update video was posted. On December 15, Infestation mode will be formally added on December 15, increasing the total number of missions to 62, three new costumes, including the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, will be added and there will be a patch. In January, the next mode will be added and it is "narrative infused," the Slimer Hunt. The original jump suits from the 1980s films will be added. It is a "darker and a bit scarier" mode. At some point, two more Proton Pack and Thrower skins will be added. One is blue, one is purple. There will be a major update headed in March 2024. The ? tease for this update is in the style of the Frozen Empire frozen No Ghost logo.[38]
On December 15, 2023, Patch 3.0 was also released.[39]
On January 26, 2024, it was revealed an AMA will be held on Discord on Monday with Nathan Baseley.[40]
On January 29, 2024, during the AMA, Nathan Baseley reiterated the Slimer Hunt DLC is coming soon. Slimer Hunt will show players how the story connects with the Ghostbusters in New York and they do intend future DLC to similarly connect with events from the movies but there are no plans to directly mimic movie scenes. Slimer Hunt has a more serious tone, they dialed back the combat and dialed up exploration and investigation, and the color palette is more muted.[41]
On January 31, 2024, Slimer Hunt was officially added. A Trailer and Developer Update #2 video were posted. Slimer Hunt takes place in Hookfaber Mansion. Players scan ectoplasm and track down Slimer to the basement. Dan Aykroyd reprises Ray and guides players through the mission. Players can choose from the original flightsuit from the first movie, the dark flightsuit from Ghostbusters II, and three from The Real Ghostbusters. Slimer is a playable avatar, too. Slimer Hunt has several homages from the movies.[42][43] An interview with Nathan Baseley was posted.[44]
On February 7, 2024, a recap of the Slimer Hunt update was posted.[45]
On March 22, 2024, it was revealed DLC 4 releases on March 28. The new story is, "There's a new threat in New York – Garraka, the terrifying ancient demi-god who's been trapped in an object not unlike one that Hookfaber brought to the Ghostbusters years ago. So, who does Ray call in this moment of need? You! What secrets does Hookfaber’s past hold? What did he know about trapping ghosts in objects? To solve these mysteries, you’ll head back to San Francisco where you’ll discover that Garraka’s powers have extended through the etheric plane, affecting locations and ghosts in ways that make everything more dangerous! Get ready for icy obstacles blocking your path, essential equipment freezing over, and powerful icy attacks from ghostly enemies." There will be five new narrative-infused missions that have the San Francisco Ghostbusters working for Dr. Ray Stantz. The Frozen Empire mission pack begins with a trip to New York where they are briefed in person by Ray at the Firehouse. Players can explore both inside the Firehouse and outside on the rooftop, and interact with parts of the scenery, including sliding down the fire poles. The Original Proton Packs are playable as well as a new invention from Lars called the Heat Beam. Lars, Podcast, and Lucky will be added as playable avatars part of the Frozen Empire update.[46]
On March 28, 2024, a 1:05 Frozen Empire launch trailer was posted.[47]
On March 29, 2024, a 2:11 video was posted featuring Logan Kim playing as Podcast in the Slimer Hunt mission as well as some footage from Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.[48]
On April 3, 2024, Update 5.0 notes were posted.[49]
On April 25, 2024, Update 5.1 went live. Ray Stantz was added as a playable character and a new Proton Pack called Mini Puft was added along with numerous fixes.[50]
On May 28, 2024, it was reported the game will be free to all PlayStation Premium members starting on June 6.[51]
On June 8, 2024, it was announced there will be a physical edition for PlayStation VR2 through publisher Red Art Games.[52]

On September 20, 2024, character artist Carlo Bernardini posted designs for Garraka, Slimer, Podcast, and Lucky.[56][57][58][59] Environment Artist Giacomo Allegri posted designs for the Firehouse in the Frozen Empire mission.[60] Environment Artist James Lodge posted designs for the Firehouse roof, Chinatown, and Alcatraz Island in the Frozen Empire missions.[61]

- Ray Stantz calls up Gabriela Sparks at the end of the game to congratulate the team on saving the world and to warn them about something involving an Apocalypse Avoidance Super Surge.[80]
- In the Slimer Hunt mission:
- There is a secret room on the second floor where the Vigo portrait is located. After scanning the first sample of ectoplasm in the foyer, head up the left stairwell, go left down a hall and go left into a room. Locate the bookcase and scan with the P.K.E. Meter. An intense reading should come off a pair of thick yellow books. Pull them out to reveal a secret passage. Inside the room, the Vigo portrait is displayed.
- On the second floor, there is a miniature model of a Harvester in one of the hallways.
- On Hookfaber's desk in the study is a notice from Petnick listing his phone number as 555-4891.
- Ray alludes to the Sedgewick Hotel by referring to Slimer as the "resident of the twelfth floor" when the player first encounters him in the underground section.
- Upon finding Slimer, Ray remarks he is a disgusting blob like in the first movie. He also calls him an ugly one.
- The scene of Slimer drinking and eating and Slimer charging Peter in the hallway is reenacted.
- Ray mentions Egon would have figured how Slimer manifested in San Francisco.
