Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is an upcoming licensed game by Illfonic set for a Fourth Quarter 2022 release as a tie-in for Ghostbusters: Afterlife but not entirely based on it. Unlike the movie, the video game features a team comprised of adult Ghostbusters and players can also play as ghosts.

On October 2, 2021, it was reported a new video game was in early development by Illfonic.[1]
On December 15, 2021, Ernie Hudson confirmed he just got an email to voice record for the game. He thinks Dan Aykroyd is involved but isn't sure about Bill Murray. Hudson added he was being sent protoypes of Winston Zeddemore and notes the company is having a hard time getting his look down.[2]
On March 22, 2022,Illfonic announced their game was titled "Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed" and posted a 1:27 trailer and press release.[3] When playing as Ghostbusters, players can calm the human NPCs and also use them to spot the ghosts. Ghostbusters will have standard gear like Traps, a Proton Pack, P.K.E. Meter but there will be unlockable weapons and equipment that will also become available to further customize the team. Some of the unlockables will be new devices. Players can also customize their character by race and/or gender. During gameplay, players can Cross the Streams to unleash a powered-up team particle beam without getting hurt. Ecto-1 can't be driven. The original Ghostbusters won't be playable. When playing as a ghost, the player wins by scaring civilians without drawing too much attention to itself. Abilities are dictated by their class from sending out spectral minions, possessing objects to hide in, teleporting across level maps using rifts, sliming and stunning Ghostbusters, and Ghost Vision, an ability that lets it see human players and NPCs through walls. Ghosts will be tied to an Ectoplasm meter that recharges after possessing inanimate objects. With the help of Tobin's Spirit Guide, players can customize their ghost. Spirits Unleashed will suppors all manners of cooperative play. Players can play as the ghost against A.I. humans or team up with friends and take on an A.I. ghost. Fighting against the computer lets users build up their skill in a lower-stakes setting and makes it more of a co-op. Inexperienced players can tag ghosts, point out rifts, help civilians, or throw traps out. The Firehouse, the game's hub is where players can walk around, put busted ghosts in the Containment Unit, and customize their avatar, gear, gender and race.[4][5][6] James and Elyse Willems confirmed they are the writers for the game.[7][8] Rahul Kohli revealed he has a voice role in the game.[9] Greg Miller confirmed he has a voice role in the game but hasn't recorded yet. Players have to throw out a Trap before they fire at a ghost and will have to pick up their Traps. Ghostbusters will also have a grappling hook to use. There will also be an offline single player mode. Characters level up and their equipment gets stronger.[10] An interview with Charles Brungardt and Jared Gerritzen was posted. Illfonic will self-publish the game, too. The pitch process started before Ghostbusters: Afterlife was known about.[11] Five minutes of pre-alpha game play in the museum level as the ghost was posted.[12]
On March 23, 2022, nine location stills and pre-alpha gameplay exploring the Firehouse, Ray's Occult Books, and the museum level playing as Ghostbusters were released.[13]
On March 24, 2022, stills and pre-alpha gameplay of the museum level of the ghost was posted.[14]
On March 28, 2022, a 5 minute pre-alpha gameplay was posted. The three rifts have to be destroyed by the Ghostbusters in the museum level. The ghost can also haunt objects and must possess an object to replenish ectoplasm.[15]
On April 29, 2022, Greg Miller recorded his lines.[16]
On May 18, 2022, concept art of the museum map was posted.[17]
On May 20, 2022, a teaser revealed a nod to the Stay Puft Marshmallows reference in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.[18]
On May 24, 2022, it was revealed Rahul Kohli is the voice of J.H. Tobin in the game.[19]
On May 27, 2022, it was revealed Greg Miller voices an evil ancient force who hates humanity known as Nameless.[20]
On May 28, 2022, the ghost seen in the museum demo was revealed to be named Winky.[21]
On May 31, 2022, it was clarified the ghost of Tobin will appear in the game.[22]
On June 2, 2022, a shot of Ecto-1 from the game was included in a promotion for the Summer Game Fest starting June 9.[23]
On June 10, 2022, a 1 minute video was released spotlighting ghosts Winky, Pokey and its Ecto Torpedo, Brainy, and Slimer. All ghosts have access to the Ectoplast Ultimate ability, Slimenado. This is an area of effect attack where your ghost of choice sprays damaging ectoplasm everywhere and has a dual purpose of getting out of sticky situations or damaging every Ghostbuster on the opposing team at once.[24][25] Two concept designs from the character customization feature were also posted.[26]
On June 21, 2022, a 3 minute video about a level taking place inside a prison called Rock Island was posted.[27][28]
On June 28, 2022, it was hinted Nameless has no form or name and is a herald of something even darker.[29]
On July 7, 2022, concepts of the Particle Thrower were posted.[30]
On July 10, 2022, a concept of a ghost minion dated January 17, 2021 was posted. Up to four can be spawned at a time.[31]
On July 28, 2022, concepts of the Trap dated January 15, 2021 were posted.[32]
