Development
On October 13, 2021, Ernie Hudson was asked if he would do a fourth canon film and he replied he "heard rumors they're writing a new one."[1][2]
On December 14, 2021, Gil Kenan mentioned he and Jason Reitman are in "very active detailed conversations" about where the next Ghostbusters could go in the wake of Afterlife.[3]
On April 25, 2022, Tom Rothman announced a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife was in the works.[4]
On June 8, 2022, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan announced they're currently writing it, the codename of the movie is "Firehouse," and they call it the next chapter in the Spengler family story.[5][6] In an interview done before Ghostbusters Day, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan revealed they had the story before work on Afterlife was finished and they were able to lay out their plans of what they wanted to see happen to the Spengler family and even outside the Spengler family to Ivan Reitman before his passing. They confirm Ernie Hudson will reprise the role of Winston Zeddemore and reveal his company's name is Zeddemore Industries and both will strongly figure into the future of the franchise.[7]
On June 10, 2022, it was revealed a freelance illustrator named Hannah drew the Firehouse image for Corbett Ink that was selected by Jason Reitman for the reveal during Ghostbusters Day. There will be a limited print run.[8]
On June 28, 2022, it was announced the movie's theatrical release date was set for December 20, 2023.[9]
