A new Ghostbusters animated series is in development for Netflix by Sony Pictures Animation. It is executive produced by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan. Elliott Kalan is a writer as well as the showrunner and an executive producer.

Development

On June 8, 2022, it was reported a new Ghostbusters animated series is in development and will premiere on the streaming platform Netflix. The series is executive produced by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan and production will be led by Netflix and Ghost Corps. No writer is currently attached. At the Ghostbusters Day event, Reitman and Kenan teased the series will navigate an unexplored era and decade of canon, there will be new characters, new places will be seen, and is set in the future.

On March 21, 2024, in an interview, Gil Kenan provided an update. He revealed he just watched presentation that included the sets, the environments, and "a world of supernatural characters" The status of the series currently is it is in full development. Scripts are currently being written and art is being created.

On June 6, 2024, Sony Pictures Animated teased on social media the series is coming soon. During Netflix's look at upcoming animation, the untitled series was listed in the Family Series section with a description of "Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are developing an animated series based on the beloved Ghostbusters IP, which will be debuted exclusively on Netflix. The high-end series is part of the streamer's elevated family animation lineup, delivering irreverent supernatural comedy and thrilling visual spectacle."

On August 12, 2024, it was reported the series was officially greenlit by Netflix. Elliott Kalan boarded the project as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. It is a 3D animated series and will be tonally in line with the recent Ghostbusters movies.

On August 21, 2024, Jamie Stevens, executive vice president of global consumer products and licensing at Sony Pictures Entertainment, mentioned the series as part of Netflix's upcoming kids' programming.

On October 10, 2024, during an interview, Gil Kenan commented, "And I've spoken recently about the fact that we are in very active development on our animated series that we're producing with Netflix. That is something that I'm actively involved with, Jason on a day-to-day basis right now, we are really excited about the stories that are starting to be told there, and the way that it intersects with the Ghostbusters stories that you and I love is going to be thrilling for our audiences."

On March 31, 2025, Sony Animation posting a listing for a position of CG Supervisor for the series.

On April 13, 2025, Flying Bark Productions announced they were working on the series and are hiring for Sydney and Spain.

On April 23, 2025, it was announced the series will be featured at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 12, 2025 during Netflix's "Animated Series Studio Focus" panel.

On May 21, 2025, at Licensing Expo 2025, Jamie Stevens, EVP of Worldwide Consumer Products at Sony Pictures Entertainment, said, "We're doubling down on this dynamic medium with new projects like an animated Ghostbusters series and a series spinoff of 'Hotel Transylvania' entitled 'Motel Transylvania.' We're excited to introduce fans of all ages and interests to these fresh stories and the unforgettable experiences they are sure to deliver."
