The Mr. Smith was asked to help get the door open to the ballroom at the Sedgewick Hotel as ordered by the Hotel manager.
Trivia
- Mr. Smith's name was not used in the Novelization, and instead it was said that the manager, the assistant manager, the maintenance man, and the locksmith were outside the door.[1] The best guess is he is the maintenance man as in the scene suggested here, only 3 people were shown on camera, and the other fellow to the right appeared to be the assistant manager.
