The Shandor Mining Company is mining operation based in Summerville.

History

The town of Summerville started out as a selenium mining operation.[1][2] The Shandor Mining Company was founded in 1927. A mountain on the property was extensively mined of its raw selenium. In the 1940s, the mine was forced to close after the company's miners, one by one, started jumping down the mine shaft to their death without warning or any sign of distress. The incident was called "The Shandorian Curse."[3][4][5] One evening in summer 2021, Egon Spengler captured Vinz Clortho in a Trap and sped out of the Shandor Mining Company in a company truck amid Psychokinetic Atmospheric Influence in the sky. He crashed through a locked chain link fence, drove through Summerville, and headed to the Farmhouse. Zuul gave chase but flew back to the Shandor property. Several days later, Podcast got an idea to convince Phoebe that ghosts exist. They went to the Shandor Mining Company property. Phoebe noticed the warning signs and asked Podcast if they were allowed to be there. Podcast told her it was totally fine and the mine was closed since the 1940s. He revealed the signs were posted due to hazardous chemical leaks and on account of dynamite. He demonstrated his safety measures, covering his nostril and mouth with his shirt. Podcast told her all about the history of Summerville starting out as a mining operation that bore into a mountain like grapefruit and smelted everything into cold riveted selenium girders. Phoebe wondered how they made a steel beam out of an electric conductor like selenium. Podcast found it weird, too, then continued with his story about how the mine was forced to close down. She asked why. He told her about the mass suicide of the miners and how the incident was called "The Shandorian Curse" ever since then. Podcast backed up behind a raggedy cloth covering up an entrance and vanished. Phoebe peered in and followed. They looked at carvings against the mountain. Phoebe asked who built it. Podcast revealed that depended on who you believed. He claimed it showed up one day without explanation.

The next day, Gary Grooberson, Phoebe, and Podcast unknowingly freed Vinz Clortho from the Trap. In its spectral form, Vinz flew straight to the Shandor Mining Company property. The crew of teenage employees at Spinners Roller Hop, including Lucky, Trevor, Bunny, Rufus, Zahk, Skittles, and Reseda, headed up to the mountain. Trevor and Lucky sat on the mine elevator. Trevor asked why she brought him along. Lucky named her reasons as entertainment value and asked him if he could juggle. Trevor was startled by a loud noise set off by the others. Lucky asked what he was doing in Summerville. Trevor contemplated his answer briefly then fessed up his family was broke, got evicted, and the only thing left in their name was the creepy farmhouse his grandfather left them in the middle of nowhere. She nodded. He added he meant to no offense. She told him she was not offended and confirmed Summerville was a dump. He asked why she lived in Summerville if she thought it was a dump. She dryly called herself "fourth generation dump." Trevor asked if she thought she would ever leave. Lucky knew she would not and asked what that said about her. Trevor joked it meant she did not own a car. She laughed but he elevator suddenly shook. They jumped off the elevator and looked down the shaft. There was a groan. The other teens noticed. They all gathered around. A spectral face briefly formed far down the shaft and spoke the word "Gozer." An orange P.K.E. wisp shot up out of the shaft. There was silence then they started laughing like it was just a practical joke.

The next day, Trevor, Phoebe, and Podcast pursued Muncher through Summerville but were unable to trap him. Muncher flew towards the Shandor Mining Company property. They managed to trap him before he could reach the mountain but they approached the bridge. Trevor screamed. Phoebe barely got the gunner seat back inside in time before impact. The side of the exposed door scraped along the bridge, then properly closed after they cleared the bridge. Everyone screamed. Ecto-1 slid into a stop and kicked up a gravel cloud. Trevor got out and high fived Phoebe. Podcast hugged Phoebe then apologized. Trevor realized they were looking at the same mountain he went to the day before.

The next day, Trevor, Lucky, Phoebe, and Podcast went to the old Shandor mine and rode the mine elevator down the shaft. They discovered the Temple of Gozer inside and the source of Summerville's earthquakes, a set of four Proton Cannons that periodically crossed streams to repel an interdimensional cross-rip and prevent Gozer's arrival. Vinz returned to the mine after they left but was now in possession of Gary Grooberson's body. He sabotaged the cannons and the cross-rip proceeded. Vinz rested outside the mine on the edge of a cliff. He looked up. Zuul walked towards him. She opened her shirt and threw it to her side. Her clothes morphed into a shiny dress. Vinz quickly got up and briskly walked to her. He complimented her eyes. Zuul spoke in dog gibberish. He thanked her, took the flower off his ear and offered it. She ate it. They embraced and dropped down to the ground. The Psychokinetic atmospheric influence grew above the property. Trevor, Phoebe, and Podcast returned to the Shandor Mining Company in Ecto-1 and trapped Zuul to lure Gozer to the Farmhouse. It worked and they took off with Callie and the Remote Trap Vehicle holding Zuul.

Behind The Scenes

On June 17, 2021, a behind the scene snippet of Finn Wolfhard, Celeste O'Connor, and others portraying teenagers during filming in the Horsethief Canyon area was posted.[6] Another brief snippet of the actors on the bed of the car was posted.[7] A photo of a Shandor Mining Company warning sign was posted.[8]

Trivia

  • The mountain was inspired by Castle Butte, a freestanding mesa in the Big Muddy Badlands of Saskatchewa and a relic from the Ice Age.[9]
  • A photogrammetry model was done of Castle Butte then the visual effects team scaled it up, modified it, and digitally composited it into shots in the movie.[10]
  • The entrance to the Shandor Mining Company was filmed at the Dorothy Ferry Bridge on Highway 848 that crosses Red Deer River in Drumheller.
  • The back of the Shandor Mining Truck indicates the brand is a GMC Ivanbuilt.
    • Ivanbuilt is a stand-in for Peterbilt.
    • Ivanbuilt refers to Ivan Reitman and "Built in 1946" references his birth year.
    • The die for the Ivan Reitman easter egg was made at Cornfield Customs then technician Pete Watkins pounded it out using old school techniques.[11]
  • There were only three left in existence of the truck bed chosen by Jason Reitman for Egon's Shandor Mining Company truck. The team made a replica based on pictures they could find.[12]
  • Parts of the Shandor truck have panels replicated with "Oh So Soft Aluminum" for the stunt. On cue, the technicians would trigger a hidden mechanism wirelessly to suck in the panel at the moment when Zuul is scripted to ram the side of the truck. At the same time, the stunt driver had to trigger the actuator system hidden inside the box on the right side of the truck body then the nitrogen arm under the truck performed the flip. They did light rehearsals to get the timing down but they had only one try to film the scene.[13][14][15][16][17]
  • Podcast revealed the Shandor Mining Company extracted selenium from the mines, a callback to the first movie when Ray Stantz noted 550 Central Park West was built with selenium girders and the building's architect was Ivo Shandor who led a cult in the 1920s that worshiped Gozer.
  • The hieroglyphs on the side of the mountain match the ones on the Temple of Gozer in the first movie.
  • The base of the mountain was built on the Studio 3 sound stage and it filled up all the space. Jason Reitman challenged production to build more and more rather than use blue screen.[18][19]
  • The drive to the Shandor mine was filmed at Horsethief Canyon in Drumheller.[20] It is about 17 minutes north of Drumheller. A false ramp was placed on the road when they drive up.
  • In the first Domestic Trailer of Ghostbuters: Afterlife, the P.K.E. stream that shoots up the mine elevator was green. By the second trailer, it was changed to orange.
  • The mine shaft entrance and elevator was added to the set location. It has since been removed and the hole filled back in.
  • The mineshaft built on the top of the mountain was only 6 feet deep.[21]
  • The teenagers looking down the shaft and seeing a figure say "Gozer" mirrors the first movie when Dana Barrett looked in her refrigerator and sees a Terror Dog say "Zuul".
  • The ominous scene of Trevor, Phoebe, and Podcast looking at Shandor Mine's mountain after trapping Muncher and realizing there's a connection mirrors when Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore came up from the sewers in Ghostbusters II and realize the River of Slime was flowing to the Manhattan Museum of Art.
  • The mine elevator was built practically. It was 45 feet tall and built on the Studio 3 sound stage in the Calgary Film Centre.[22][23]
    • The mine elevator lands in the Studio 2 sound stage where the Temple of Gozer set was.[24]

As for the flipper, that'll be the stunt guy actually has his own button on board, is a little programmable logic controller that once he hits that button, it just starts off a chain reaction for the big flip arm. The valve opens, arm goes down, hits a limit switch, the computer then says retract and high so by the time he's almost upside down, it's already gone, you're going where did it go from so inside of that box right there we've hidden in here is a whole actuator system."
