The Sphinx

Slimer, for some reason, is trying to lose weight.

Egon is nearing 40 and Janine points this out. But he refuses to back down and be only the old mentor, so he tags along with the team to investigate a paranormal attack on a brilliant professor. But in doing drives the Ecto 1 over spikes, after not being able to see the sign saying NO ENTRY. The professor is taken back for study, and his brain waves show no activity what so every, and his behavior makes him out like a babbling idiot. Egon also finds a feather at the sight, which gives the DNA of a dog, a snake, an eagle, and a lion. He points out this must be the Greek Sphinx at work.
Apparently the ghost of ancient legend is skulking about the city, seeking out intelligent people to answer his riddle. Those that fail have their intelligence sucked literally out of them. The XGB find this out after investigating more cases like the professor, several Brainiac friends, and an entire building full of MENSA members. Along the way Garrett gives Egon a cane to help his bad leg, this and Eduardo's jokes don't help his middle age spirits.
Eventually the trail leads them to believe the Sphinx is in the U.N. building. But of course security takes them as nuts and throws them out, so Eduardo helps lead them to sneak into the building. The team blasts their way through the complex, finally cornering the Sphinx, but he continues asking them to answer the riddle, they refuse and he grows more vicious. In an now stopped elevator, Egon and Garrett fight over who is going to get them out. When Egon calls Garrett "Ray" in frustration, Garret calms him down with a pep talk. So finally Egon steps up and takes the riddle everyone else could not. So the Sphinx asks, "What walks on Four Legs in the morning, Two in the afternoon, and Three at Night?".
Egon answers MAN. He walks on four as a baby, two as a grown man, and with his own cane, points out three in old age. The answer is right and the Sphinx is baffled and his feathers begin falling put in stress. He tries asking another riddle but the XGB don't give him a chance, they blast him and trap him as he literally falls apart in rage over someone getting a right answer.
Trivia
- Egon mentions he and Ray Stantz were kicked out of the university, the one the EGB investigates in the episode, in 1982 for trying to reanimate the dead.
- The university appears to be New York University and Roland mentions he's interested in transferring there someday.
- Garrett was 3 years old in 1982.
- The first victim of the Sphinx is named Professor Barthes in the Department of Philosophy. This seems likely to be a reference to the 20th century philosopher Roland Barthes.
- When the Ghostbusters study the fibers of the Sphinx, Eduardo references Barnum & Bailey's, a famed animal act merged with the Ringling Brothers Circus.
- The Egyptian Sphinx is confused for the Sphinx of Greek mythology by the Extreme Ghostbusters.
- Egon mentions the city of Thebes was visited by the Sphinx. It is said Oedipus correctly answered the riddle of the Sphinx and became king of Thebes.
- Garrett mentions he saw "Clash of the Titans" when he was a child.
- A trio of intellectuals listen to the game show "Jeopardy!".
- The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are mentioned on Jeopardy. The original Ghostbusters defeated the Horsemen in The Real Ghostbusters episode "Apocalypse - - What, Now?"
- When the Ghostbusters arrive at the scene, the TV is then implicitly playing an episode of "Wheel of Fortune," when a contestant asks Pat [Sajak] to buy a vowel.
- When Egon shows the pizza boy photos of ghosts to confirm that he saw the Sphinx, Tempus is in the photo at the top of the stack.
- A Rubik's Cube is seen at MENSA headquarters.
- Egon mentions he was MENSA until he was disbarred by the American Science Association.
- While in the elevator, Egon calls Garrett, "Ray."
- Egon admits old age at 39 years.
- Garrett reassures Egon the team needs him for his experience, not to act like Rambo.
